Check for King Pin movement by jacking the front wheels off the ground (can be one at a time) grab the tyre top and bottom and try to wiggle it back and forth, if you can feel movement it's either the wheel bearings or King Pin bearings.
Take on some dirt when you test 4WD. If it engages properly you should get little or no wheel spin when you accelerate fast. The Auto hubs are known to develop faults.
Look for signs of water in the Air filter box.
Gearbox and transfer case develop leaks around the shaft outputs, so look for oil around them and on the underneath of the cabin floor.
If the Jimny has had a problem with the crank angle sensor which would cause back-firing the Catalytic Converter may be blown through. Hit the muffler with your palm to see if you can hear loose crap inside. If so you may need a new exhaust from the Cat back. The loose crap inside can develop to a severe blockage.
If the motor sounds rough it could just be worn belts. Check them, if they're worn it could be a sign of poor maintenance habits of the current owner.
