yay, so i got a winch today

and found some info on OL about how to mount it, so just thought i'd post it here as tech. I would like to mount it on the back so it doesn't stuff up my approach angle. So we'll see how we go.

mounted the winch on the back. It's not finished yet, so not sure how it'll go with the winding up evenly thing.

oooooh difficult one!!..................... this must have been accomplished previously there are heaps of military vehicles with mid mounts.

yeah, well we made a new front bar and a guide for the rope at the front today. Still have to fit a battery in the back, and smaller fuel tank.

What you need a winch for ?
Event Style:
Rockcrawling for full bodied rigs. No crash and bash BS, just hard technical courses and a few bonuses that will test your teamwork and skill. Courses will be designed so there is no real advantage in larger tyres (no scrably diff hanging pebbles to annoy!!!). The idea is to go wheelin with a good crew of blokes and have a beer after!!! and maybe get a trophy in the process.

Vehicle Specs:
35"min - 40"max tyres
F&R lockers
OEM chassis from centerline of Front diff to centerline of Rear diff - dimensionally unchanged.
Full bonnet, firewall and floorpan width (ute sizing as minimum) minor alterations accecptable. guards preferred.minimum of half doors and window nets/wrist restraints.
Full rollcage as per most comps - and all the usual safety stuff (extinguisher, kill switch etc).
Suspension and steering open.
Winch and sufficient recovery equipment - self recovery!!!
No portal or drop-reduction differentials.
No rear steer.
No rego required.

thanks for the offer ant, but i couldn't run your tyres anyway unless i changed diffs, and that's a whole other bunch of issues, need power steering, maybe more panel clearing etc etc

anyone know if i can stick a big battery in the back, and just wire it up to the front battery... or do i need wierdo isolators and stuff?

are you going to make it so you can feed te rope out the back if need be?

and mount a tool box for all the garbage you have to take with a winch?

bang a big battery in the back, get an isolator for between front and back and your done, just a simple isolator will do, its more so that if you are winching heaps with the engine off you dont flatten your start battery as well more than anything, no fancy electronic thingies jsut a simple solenoid type

I think the angle of the winch might cause a problem if i wanted to run the rope out the back. not too worried about that though, i think it'd be a rare occassion.

The plan is to have a battery on the left side , petrol tank on the right side, and who knows about a tool/winch box.

where can i get a suitable isolator? supercheap?

got most of it done on the weekend, except for hooking it up to the front battery. Went for a little drive and had to even use it because i got stuck, so we hooked up some jumper leads from back to front and worked well.

It even spooled on pretty good and just started to bunch near the end but still had plenty of room.

We cut the petrol tank in half so it didn't interfere with the rope, and cut the roller fairlead in half to make a smaller slot so it didn't move too much under the car. There is one short bit of tube under the car mounted under a chassis cross member.

Well a sierra tank is 40lt so by cutting it in half I'd guess 20lts
