hey people
i live in NSW and i have just bought a jimny with a few awesome mods. Turns out that there is a bit more involved in buying a car from out of state, especially when there are modifications, i had no idea. the QLD rego has to be canciled and the car has to pass a blueslip. Now then all the modifications need to be removed and the car has to be reverted back to standard (reasonably anyway). Fortunatly i was given all the standard parts apart fron the wheels and tyres. So i have bought some standard wheels and tyres with good tread for $100 and removed the body lift and i think i may have to remove the 3" toughdog lift (which is awesome apart from the ride) Moral of the story - buy a standard car or get it engineered.
Just a heads-up for people who are non the wiser as i was.

Id have a talk to an engineer anyway. Some things like the body lift might not need to be taken off or might be easily engineered. Most of them are pretty good to deal with and will tell you what you can get away with.

how bout a standard legislation so its clear black and white no matter what state your in. and legislation that is relevant to australian conditions and terrain, and not some bulshit euro crap.
if i cant keep 31's on a zook.... i cant keep my zook. simple.

3" spring. It would pass pink-slip but not a blueslip. Has to be either engineered or standard for a blueslip
how bout a standard legislation so its clear black and white no matter what state your in. and legislation that is relevant to australian conditions and terrain, and not some bulshit euro crap.
There is a nation-wide specification for vehicles, it's called the Australian Design Rules, or ADRs. But if you mean nation-wide rules for vehicles modified beyond the factory-standard, well that's a lot harder to standardise across the country.
They tried to do that by implementing a National Code of Practice (NCOP) on vehicle modifications, but it was howled down by just about every stakeholder as unworkable as each and every State has some rule that is not permitted in another State. Somebody somewhere would have been up for a lot of money to re-modify their currently legal vehicle to meet the new national guidelines. And lets face it, what exactly is/are Australian terrain and conditions? A perfect vehicle for the SA outback would not be the best for the Vic High country, or the Cape, or West Coast Tas. And let's not go into inner city metro conditions compared to country rural roads.
The NCOP still exists at a Federal level, but each State now picks and chooses it's own bits it likes from the national framework, and nowhere has adopted it whole.

i understand that, but it really is that simple, just make a national standard, like 50mm bigger tyres, 50mm bigger suspension before an application or engineer has to come into it.
its just that simple. put a start date on it,
basically they cant keep dicking around with no direction like they are, but tightning up the laws to qld standard isnt exactly the right direction either.
or adopting euro bull bar laws.... what a stupid joke of an idea that was.

Ever worked for or with a government department?
Something that severe requires positively huge upsets and change, and most of the established crusty old bureaucrats will resist fiercely. I've worked for a state department whilst it was beggining to adopt a national code of practice (they actually still haven't, planning years in advance was going on). The disruptions that far ahead of adoption were quite notable, and it effects so many peoples jobs so massively; entire offices basically require re-training...

yeah i work for the government.
but surely there could be a amnesty of vehicles modified before the "new" standard legislation.
lets say... the new standard legislation starts 1/1/2012... as long as your vehicle is within current laws for your state, you will be given an amnesty from having to change your car to meet the new legislations.
the new legislation should be more informed on what is within the guide lines of a acceptable modification.

I agree; basically the same as a car made before an ADR all of a sudden doesn't have to meet that ADR. But I still think convincing a government department (ie the primary decision makers in that department) its a good idea to adopt a new encompassing and job changing COP would be so incredibly difficult, and hence the idea has just been let slide...

Tasmania had adopted the NCOP as a whole.
My engineering process had to comply with it. I asked to have 235's engineered, they flat out said no. As they were "outside the scope of the regulations" I couldn't even ask or argue...
Interestingly, they also wanted a lane change test for a 75mm lift. I decided against the lift and brought the car back down close to stock height.

That's where the shitfighting started. With ADR's, it's quite easy to say a vehicle was built before or after a particular ADR.
With a owner-certified modification, how do you certify when it was implemented? Lets say Driver A and Driver B both own 1995 Sierras that they both bought 2nd hand in 2007. Driver A's suzy has a 2" lift, bodylift and 30" tyres on 15x7 wheels and was like that when he bought it. Driver B's Sierra is stock.
How are you going to legislate that Driver A can keep his vehicle like that without submitting to a full engineer's inspection to document every single mod (he might not have the dated receipts for each item), and how would you stop Driver B from modifying his vehicle outside the new spec limits to look like another "Pre-law" vehicle of the same age? If Driver A gets a blanket OK that says his car is a Pre-Law mod without certifying what those mods are, what's to stop him then fitting 32" tyres and SPOA and saying that's how it's always been?

Panhards may still be set for the lift if they are the adjustable kind.
May have also been stuffed up with the lift but just didn't notice.
