On Sunday we were on our way to Fraser and my daughters 2002 Jimny suffered engine problems.
Symptoms were initial very gutless on the hills then finally it just would even take off at the lights. We ended up getting RACQ who put it done to the cat, due to time constraints we parked the car at relatives and loaded all the gear into the other cars and went on our merry way.

My question is has anyone had similar issues and what was the fixes. If it is the cat what is the best exhaust system to upgrade to.

it could be a million things with that info.

running rough? could be map sensor. cam sensor.

its it showing an check engine light?

Well if the catalytic converter has calapsed, or there is an incling that it might have, you're only option is to pull it out and inspect.

go for a drive runing it streight out the extractors. take some heat off the bikies.
if your keen on a upgrade you can get extractors off ebay or go to a zaust shop and get 2" or if they have it 48mm.
a 1.3 wont be able to use a 2" and i reckon oversize exhausts cause some loss in torque from back pressure scavenging cylinders, as per some dyno's done over time.

My old Jimny had a cat issue like this.
Get underneath and bash the muffler with the palm of your hand. If it sounds like there's loose stuff floating around in there the cat has probably collapsed and been blown through into the muffler.
Mine had exactly the same symptoms, over a couple of hours it got more and more sluggish as more of the cat broke away and flowed into the muffler. Luckily with a bit of thumping on the muffler the blockage dislodged enough to get home.

Thanks all for your input, sorry for the lack of info, it has been running fine with no back firing at all, no engine light and no other symptoms except it did exactly the same as zukenutter. The cat does rattle when you hit it so might be on the right track there.

Bump the muffler, that's probably where any blockage will be. Could have backfired with the previous owner or it could just be that the cat disintegrated with age.

Car is on the north side until we get back from Fraser we'll drop the muffler and see if we can get it home that way

If it turns out to be the exhaust, what would be the best options? It has standard fitted and we don't need anything hi performance or loud

At the time I replaced mine with a sport muffler but a good exhaust shop will be able to suggest something

What year range would the exhaust have to be from if we went second hand (or new) or doesn't it matter?

Anything from 2001 onward should fit

We got the rig home today and I split the exhaust behind the cat. Surprise surprise ---- blocked as.

So new question as we have time and logistic constraints can we just shake the rest of the crap out and drive on like this until we get time etc to get a new zorst fitted

I'd gut the cat and bolt it back up. Then sort it out when you get home.

Dave we're already home, we just need a bit more time and need to usee the car. I was thinking if we unblock the exhaust we could get away with driving it for a while until we have found the best solution

Been researching tonight but can't find enough info on what fits etc. we have also had trouble getting it off because of the corroded nuts and bolts. I have soaked them and will try tomorrow.

Yeah those bolts get pretty nasty

Loctite freeze release or Wurth make one aswell and with the muffler, another trick is to heat up the nut and then hold an ice cube or two on the end of the bolt.
I'd hose it out to keep the dust down.

I have managed to get it all out with no damage to bolts flanges etc. the cat is all through the pipe and some in the muffler. The plan is to replace the cat with a hi flow 2" and try and get the remaining bits out of the muffler put it all back together and see how it goes. Should keep the cost down to about $80

Yeah looks like most of it was caught at the first join after the cat. I've got the new cat and most of the crap out of the muffler

Tomorrow weather depending we will glue it all back together and see how it goes. Couldn't be worse right?

Just out of interest what are the cats made of or why is the dust bad?

Well the Jimny is back together with the new cat. I have maybe a new problem or it could be related or was there before and that is the idle seems a bit low and the engine starts running a bit rough. Just got to work out if it is low and how to tweak it

Could new some new coil packs, that's what destroyed my cat. Engine had been missing a bit and running rough.
How long has your daughter owned the Jim? Do the packs look like originals OEM?

Also could be the common crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor. Usually will be fine around town apart from high fuel consumption but when it sits at highway speed it will cut out after 20 mins or so.
