There are two styles of coil pack - 2 wire & 3 wire - based on the number of wires in the connector - early production vehicles have the 2 wire, later have the 3 wire.

I clip my timing light pickup to either one of the two outer wires in the harness leading to the 3 wire coil pack (one is +12v, the other is ground), and you should be able to use either wire with a 2 wire coil pack.

Why do you need to check the timing? It doesn't move unless someone fiddles with it.
