hey guys my sierra is having some issues with the steering it feels jumpy like i can turn fine and then it will go very hard in certain spots turning both directions.

take off the steering damper and see how it feels.... also take the plastic screw out of the top of the steering box and fill it with diff oil or bearing grease (i did 50/50 in mine).

I will try taking it off tommrow and if still no change i will fill it and see how it goes

try the uni in the steering shaft they seize up

Last time i had trouble with steering it was a snapped cv, there would probably be the most minor of minor chances that this is you case though. food for thought

Which is why it is vitally important to remove the broken CV as soon as you break it. They can and do lock up the steering, even when the hubs are unlocked.

Stewy91 - I think it's likely to be the uni at the firewall end of the steering shaft that's seized. Try dousing it in CRC/WD-40/the penetrating spray lube of your choice, and see if it improves, even just a little bit. If it does, then you know what you need to replace.

yea mate was the uni gave it a bit of degrese and it freed up

It's likely to only last a little while before it gets tight again. As you have a WT sierra, it has a replaceable uni on the firewall end of the shaft. It's time to get hold of one of them.

PS 1.0litres don't have a replaceable uni - it's welded to the shaft.

I have a similar problem with a 96 SWB Vitara.
From my checking, there are obviously differences between these vehicles steering set ups. I can't locate a uni joint as stated for the sierra.

Where should I start looking for the problem, and what are some possible solutions.

There are two unis on a vitara. Depending on year one is removable, one isn't.

Theres a few variations.

They aren't easy to spot - they have rubber boots over them.

Serious question Steve....will it fit a coily ?

I would like to piss off my steering shaft as I think I am up to uni number 3 in 18months. What other options are available or a better option?

I have noticed some of the aftermarkt stuff is rubbish.

NFI The angle from the fire wall to the box is ok, but the uni seems to be at a bit of a weird angle, kind of just answered my own question didn't I

I got a price a while back of $125 for a genuine replacement uni.....

I found some decent second hand one's for $10 so I bought 2! I'm still on the first one
