Nope - the GV doesn't have a vacuum operated front free wheel system - which of the GVs do you have?

First generation GVs (98~05) use a positive pressure (vacuum is negative or the absence of pressure) free wheel system, a flashing light is usually caused by an air leak in the system, second generation GVs (06~) have an electrically shifted transfer case (if fitted with the four mode 4WD) and a flashing light indicates the actuator(s) and the switch are not in sync (or at least the controller thinks they are not), it can be caused by broken wires and defective switches..

I took the lines off just back from the diff, where the solid vac lines goto a t-piece to each hub. cut the tip off some golf tees, shoved em in as far as i could with a screwdriver, and reconnected em. that way you only have to block 2 lines, not 4

mine did this, 4x4 worked still but I found a tutorial on how to fix, can't remember where, it may have been on here, mine had a rusty valve in the pump, everytime the pump cycled the light would flash. now that I cleaned the rusty valve it holds pressure and doesn't cycle.

very easy job to do.

Rapid flash - 1 sec on/1 sec off type thing - or occasional wink out - 30 sec on/1 sec off ?

Either way you probably have an air leak, the light winks out every time the pump turns on, so the more frequent the flash, the bigger the leak is.

Look behind the front bumper and find the pump - disconnect the output hose (the one that leads back along the frame rail to the crossmember) and plug the outlet, and observe the light, if it stays on your leak is downstream from where you plugged it, work your way back through the hoses to the diff connector - if you don't find a leaky hose, the actuator in the diff may have failed..

If it continues to flash with the pump outlet plugged, the problem will be in the pump itself - it may or may not be repairable - there is a pictorial teardown in the good tech section, if you want to have a go at fixing it.
