Over night my vit G16B has developed a tapping sound. I think its coming from the head and it sounds like someone is hitting the engine with a hammer really quickly. I have been having a few issues with the car lately, I have replaced the ignition coil and the alternator and mucked around with the timing a bit because I pulled the dizzy out and didn't mark anything. not sure if any of these things have caused or contributed to this noise. there is also what sounds like a belt squeek. I thought it was the fan belt or the alternator but I have both tightened and loosened them and it hasn't changed the noise. perhaps the tap and squeak are related? Any ideas?

Ok I seemed to have fixed everything somehow. it must have been pinging, I had never heard it before and didn't think it would be so loud/violent.

put 98ron fuel in it if it's pinging or reset your timing.

ya I just fiddled around with the timing a bit more. I'm pretty sure it's at about 6 degrees now. I'm trying to get the the over-run burbles back since I stuffed up the timing last Friday.

How did you measure it?

I lined the marks on the fly wheel up to 6 and adjusted the rotor to the centre of the pick up coil

You need to do it with a timing light to set it properly.
