Just wanna know what engine conversions are easiest / most affective , not having to chop shit / make up all custom shit , won't cost a million buks !! I have a g13a plenty of power off road but just want some more balls for road use , seeming as I travel up the mountains a poo load and going to be doing more free way driving , any decent upgrades for the g13a without drinking more fuel I'm allready geting around 250km to a full tank probly like 35 litters tanks had a few dings !! I'm not chasing silly horse power just good fuel and a tad more get up and goo !! Any help and advice would be much appreciated

I'm thinking a G16B upgrade would be pretty easy

Easiest and most effective aren't quite the same thing,
Easiest would be a G16A. Personally I think these are nothing special and are now getting quite hard to find in good condition. 55Kw/120ishNm
Most effective would be a G16B. Quite an easy swap if you find a vitara one, bit more complex if you find a Baleno one, but Baleno motors are cheap and easy to find, and generally newer and fresher than Vitara motors. 75Kw/127Nm
In between is the G13B GTi. From a difficulty point of view, somewhere between a G16A and G16B, but GTi motors aren't well suited to 4WD use as the power band is very high in the rev range. They do make 75Kw though.
However, I just skimmed though your build thread and I can't tell if you've done your gearing yet. If you haven't, it's not surprising that you're unhappy with your performance and economy.
Steve.

250km/35l sounds like you need a proper tune up more than anything else.

I fitted a Swift TBI injection system (the engine was rebuilt completely just before I bought the hightop Sierra). Improvement in economy 10-20 % depending on driving conditions (up to 12 kpl highway). Performance improvement 10 kph faster on the steep freeway up track to Crafers from Adelaide (90 kph versus 80 kph flat-out). Although the fuel consumption dropped, the range between tank fills hasn't increase because I can't run the tank to empty. I suspect my fuel injection pump is creating a vortex in the tank (I should have found a lower flow rate pump than the Bosch unit I fitted).

Are you adding 17% to your economy figures to correct your tyres? That will improve things a bit.
6.5 transfer for nsw and 31's

when you fit larger tires, you are making your gear ratio's taller. taking off on larger tires in 1st gear is similar to taking off in 2nd gear on standard size tires. imagine what this means for 5th gear... the engine just doesnt have the torque to push the car along at speed in 5th, you need to use more throttle = more fuel used.
you get reduction gears in the transfer, it shortens the gear ratios. the engine will rev higher in any given gear at the same speed but it will do it with less effort = less fuel used.

Your odometer won't be reading accurately because of your 31's. If you travel 250km on your odometer, you're actually travelling almost 300km, which is much better economy. Not great, but not too bad for a carby sierra with crap gearing.
If you have already corrected the km figure then that's terrible economy.

Na I haven't corrected it ok that makes sense !! If you place reduction gears in the transfer won't it just affect the gearing of the 4x4 ?? No idea .. I was looking at 6.5s but thought that was just for 4x4

Hills4x4#1 wrote: Yeah as I thought , so diff ratios ? Nope! Just get yourself a set of transfer case gears. They lower both on and offroad gearing (high and low gear ratios are lowered) and are a much better/cheaper/simpler solution then diff gears. With the 6.5s in you will be able to crawl up obstacles without abusing and slipping the clutch. On road it will almost feel like a gear difference ie 5th will feel closer to 4th and place the engine in its happy rev range. Once you have done the gears then decide if you need more power.

Also noticed you finally came around and done the RUF to your rig and was quite impressed with how it went. Well these transfercase gears will completely transform your car! More so then the RUF.

Just read a bit more mate. Here's the chart off lowrange. I assume you know the meaning of high range reduction.
Gear Set --------- 4.16:1| 4.9:1| 5.14:1| 6.4:1| 6.5:1| Low Range Reduction-- 84% | 115%| 127%| 181%| 187%| High Range Reduction-- 12% | 16%| 18.3%| 17%| 20%|
Lets say you changed diff gears to the most popular ones around over your stock 3.7's
Gear Set----------- 3.9:1| 5.12:1| Low Range Reduction-- ~5% | ~38%| High Range Reduction-- ~5% | ~38%|
Obviously that results in the same high and low range reduction. If you wanted to make a significant change then you would put in 5.12 diff gears. So comparing this to the lowest transfercase reduction gear set (4.16:1) your high range reduction is huge and you will probs be revving around the 4500RPM+ at 100kph in 5th. Where as the low range reduction is not even half as good as the smallest transfercase reduction gear set.
So with those diff gears you would end up with too much reduction on road and too little reduction offroad, the worst of both worlds...
