Hey everyone, from what i seem to have found is that the G16A 8v is Carby, G16A 16v is TBI and the G16B 16v is EFI, is that correct? Are manifolds, cams, pistons etc interchangeable between the G16A/B 16v or are they completely different heads? I've read that the G16A 8v is a completely different head setup (non interchangeable parts with the 16v, water jackets etc). Seen heaps of info on the G16B vs G16A 8v but don't seem to see much in the way of the G16A 16v. But have seen HEAPS of threads on other forums about the G16A 16v in swifts overseas, the G series engines are interchangeable between transverse and longitudinal aren't they? I imagine they would have the same bellhousing bolt pattern (eg. GTi G13B Twincam into sierra)

Sorry about the noob questions, but in a Nissan guy....

Correct, all carby cars are G16A

False. There are G16A MPFI and G16A TBI. No TBI engines were used in Australian delivered vitaras, so G16A or B EFI engines will all be MPFI. Note that to confirm whether an engine is G16A or B you'l'l have to check the engine number. All G16B engines still had "G16A" cast on the right hand rear of the block.

All G16B motors locally are MPFI.

Same, however, G16A 16V engines have a different camshaft belt tooth profile.

Correct. You CAN swap the 16V head onto any G16 bottom end if you're keen to spend lots of time making an interference motor.

Yes, all G16's have the same bell housing pattern, just as all G13's have the same pattern. Note the G13 and G16 have different patterns, but adapters are available to go either way. Yes, with appropriate trim, you can swap any transverse G motor to longitudinal. This may or may not be a hassle. (for instance, Distributor swift G16's require a cam swap, Transverse G16's have the top radiator hose outlet at the back of the head which can be both bad and good.

Cheers Steve. I got word of a cheap G16B long motor and a mate of mine has some R1 40mm Mikuni carbs and was gonna Frankenstein a quad carb G16B for a early G16A 8v Vitara. I believe the 16v head would be more suitable.

INTAKE VALVE AREA
8v - 1 x 36mm - 1052mm2
16v - 2 x 29.2mm - 1340mm2
DOHC - 2 x 29.1mm - 1326mm2

EXHAUST VALVE AREA
8v - 1 x 32.5mm - 829mm2
16v - 2 x 25mm - 978mm2
DOHC - 2 x 24.9mm - 973mm2

Surprisingly, the G13b DOHC has only marginally smaller valves. Just was trying to figure out what manifold to chop to get the job done, but seeing as the G16A 16v came with carbies overseas, maybe an import manifold would be he way to go? i love the sound and throttle response of quad carbs/ITB. If i use the G13B DOHC head, mk1 mechanical dizzy and EFI Manifold, i could tap a thread into the injector holes and put a nipple in there to attach a vacuum balance pipe to attach to the brake booster as well. This would also make it possible to not use an ECU for spark and offer the ability to independently time my cams, would it not? Does that sound like I'm on the right track?

The carbed 16v G16s weren't that common - the only vehicle I can think of that had them is the SF416 Swift - and those used a single choke down draft carb so the manifold would not be well suited to your project.

It'll be eaiser to start a manifold from scratch.
John racing did one.

I have thought about it, i have made lots of stuff out of things laying around.
Just because you have stuff doesnt mean its worth the effort.
I playedbaround with carbies for a few years on sierras and other thibgs.
Now 2/3 of my sierras are g16b, and from experience, efi is so much better, it just works, it's so much more reliable than carbies and the power is good.
I prefer the coilpack g16b as it's neater.

A factory efi (g16b/g13b/g13bb) goes in pretty damn easy, and the wiring and install is so much easier than fucking around being a tightarse, trying to use carbies. Carbies used to be cool, but efi (mpfi) is so much better.
