I normally line em up by eye..
If you have an ole g/box laying round you can pull the input shaft out & use that....

youve only got to get it in the middle, look down the hole with one eye and first look at the splines, if they look even your eye is in the middle, then look at the machining of the spigot hole, if the rings are central to the splines your in

If you were in Redcliffe QLD i'd pop over and do it for you :)

dude just do it by eye and feel. line the hole up in the middle. then feel the gaps around the pressure plate should be even on all sides. theres three maybe four spots you can check on the pressure plate. you should be able to feel that the clutch disk is equal at all gaps. hope this makes sense. it does to me

If you really must use an allignment tool, just use a bolt, round bar, or something round that's the size of the spigot bearing. Then just wrap tape around it in the right spot to the thickness of the spline of the clutch plate.

Instant allignment tool.

Ha ha...this thread brings back memories, I remember about 25years ago this old fella used to live in that strange old house that is straight ahead of you when you come to the top of Coopers Camp Road Bardon (up from your old place Steaky ) he used to work on cars at that old house, his name was Barry. Anyway I was there one day and he had a square cake tin with all these clutch aligning tools for different cars, he had turned them down out of hardwood on this little old wood lathe and they had the car written on them with a niko pen.

well this clutch aligning tool from supercheap is shit, i've tried like 5 times now and still doesn't work, i followed both sets of instructions even, i tried the other listed methods they don't work either, i've had to hire a second crane to try this again, and i'm just running out of money and need my car back,

can anyone tell me a SURE FIRE way to get this bloody engine to my gearbox, this is beyond frustrating, it shouldn't be this hard especially when i bothered to buy the bloody tool for the job

*sigh*

yeah i've tried that, i dunno if i just have bad judgement or something, i even tried to match the gap around the edges,

am i doing something wrong when it meets the gearbox? i get the two studs lined in the holes on the block, but then it just gets stuck in the middle, i assume it's the clutch plate?

they dont jsut slide together, you need to sometimes turn the motor a bit to line the slines up (gearbox in gear) and give it a good shove

you could also put the gear box in gear and slide the jack shaft in the back. turn it to help the splines mesh??

I have had to either twist the gearbox or turn the shaft to line them up before. i doubt it would turn itself

Some boxes can take a lot of wrestling to get in. I found it easier to have the gearbox floating, mount the engine properly, then get under and shove the box back on. Try the box in gear with the shaft in and turn till you feel it engage in the spline. Then just push and wiggle.

you can get vehicle specific aligning tools for next to nothing. I got mine for my sierra for like $8. Just a plastic cheapie but it works fine. The gearbox still takes a while to line up properly though.
