hey guys

in T-minus 1 hour and 35 minutes (midday) i'm rebuilding my carby

anyone got any tips or hints i should or shouldnt do?

i'm more than capable of doing this, just never tackled a carby with a automatic choke before and thats the part i know i'm going to mess up.

get the factory manual, print out the carby pages and study them first

pull it apart slowly and watch for the balls that fall out, they need to go back in the right places

remember carby rebuilds are all about checking things are to tolerance and adjusted properly and CLEAN not just bunging new gaskets in.

I downloaded the sj413 manual last week, i've got a fresh set of pages printed out and i've been going over them. the kit comes with very basic set of insturction.

i'm doing this at work so i've got use of the 'engineering bench' as we call it but its really just a bench with a fancy light magnifying glass combo and a parts cleaner. also being at work i have access to balls, some springs, o rings, gasket paper, solvents, every loctite product ever made and a parts washer

i'm going to lay out some plastic first and pull it apart slow and lay everything out as i took it off, and take photo's to refer too if needed.

I find pulling it apart over something with some kind of lip is useful too so if something falls out it doesnt run away

get lots of carby clean too, you want it all to be spotless clean through all the vents and passages too

wen you lift the top off the carby, watch out for the spring and ball bearing that is in the accelerator pump carb circurt

you would not beleive how helpfull that is oozuk.

i have the spring, the retainer. and i just found the ball in the bottom filter of the parts washer.

i assume the ball sits atop the retainer?

i'm going through the manual now looking for a breakdown and didn't know where to start

hehe this is funny why are you doing it at work? and make sure the carby-manifold gasket is on straight and flat as it runs real bad with a crinkled one....lol

and i've never been so angry in my life.

its over fueling something horrid, and stalling. but for the first time the chokes actually opening and closing.

any ideas on what i've done wrong or what i can do to get it running?

ah bloody 1.3 carbs always have given me trouble.
all i do is swap 2/3 plug leads over and make it cough back up through the carby gets rid of all the crap and keeps it working for a few hours more lol.

I had my carby done by a shop, I had the same thing happen. If I remember correctly he startved the carb of fuel with some multigrips over the fuel line, when it was just about ready to stall he let them off to flood out any crap that was in the needle and seat. Worked a treat, other than that I know 4/5ths of fuck all about 1.3 carbs, other than they are a piece of shit when there not working properly!!

just get it tuned... unless your nik you can't wreck 2 sierra carbys trying to rebuild them...

is the float level correct?

if the choke is on now you probably need to make sure its set right (you did set it on the bench didnt you) and youll need to adjust the fast idle then the idle mixture and speed once it warms up

you need patience to do this shit it doesnt jsut work you know
