hi all since i have had my g16b in my sierra,so all this year it has had a slight weep out of the gasket which went straight onto the extractors and smelt bad.It wasnt a large amount or a stream of oil but i was worrried of a fire so replaced it.

I cleaned the mating surfaces up nice and clean,all looked flat and good,fitted new gasket into the cover and had a light smear of grease on it.Put it all back together and it was good.Stopped the leak at the exhaust but is weaping out the back near the dizzy.The gasket wasnt the best fit ever in the groove.Should i try another one or could i possibly pull it off again and add some sort of gasket maker/sealant aswell??

Use a silicone, 3bond or ultra blue, ultra blue is cheaper & is sensor safe.

i had a leak for ages around my rockercover, i just tightened it up some more and it stopped...

you dont use sealants on cork gaskets , if anything you should use contact adhesive to glue the gasket into the rocker cover before fitting. and no grease .

also , maybe replace the o'ring in the distributor housing that goes on the back of the head

i believe its coming out the gasket,not at the oring on the dizzy so i dont want to interrupt it if i dont have to.

Its a gasket from bursons,not a cork one tho?

You haven't, i've been using sealant's on cork with great success for 21yr's.

For cork gaskets i've been using permatex aviation sealant.. the brown glue stuff... I've also used GreyMaxx and it works pretty well too (even though using greymaxx is sorta defeating the point of using a gasket in the first place)..

I greymaxxed the gasket on my rocker cover & the sump gasket.. no leaks there! Both are cork. I however did not use any sealant on the o-ring for the dizzy and have no leaks. Well, it was all leak free till the rear main fell out LOL

To the OP i'd probably go and buy a new cork gasket and get it to fit properly on the rocker cover with some sealant.. it may have lifted or warped when you tightened it down.. Get a mirror and have a look where its leaking to be sure...Also check your engine breathing, could be blocked causing excessive crankcase pressures to blow out the gasket.

ive looked around it a bit and no where seems blown out etc.One bit has bulged a little but no where near where it leaks.

So how do i check the breathing then incase somethings blocked??

The gasket i have now is just like a rubber? gasket

P C V positive crankcase ventilation.
Will be a hose that goes from the rocker cover to the intake manifold, bout 10-12mm inner dia, has a valve at the cover side, valve can be cleaned out, most times if the hose is blocked cleaning will just bugger it.
At idle, if you slowly unscrew the oil cap & it hiss's at you, the PCV is blocked, can be partly block & still push oil out tho.

Its raining outside tho and i gotta go away at 4 in the morning but will check it asap and do something about my gasket.See if i can seal this one with ultrablue or get a new one

When I did my apprenticeship, was taught to always use a non hardening sealant on cork gaskets.
This one to be exact: Permatex No 2

Since then I cheat from time to time and used silicon.

Doing the fasteners up tighter on a rocker cover with an old hard cork gasket usually makes em split and leak worse.

Wouldn't imaging a new cork gasket and tube of permatex would set you back much.

you have to be careful you dont overtighten cork or they dont seal anymore

do you have a 16valve? you mention a rubber gasket, in that case you need a dob of sealant in the corners of the moon bits cause the rubber doesnt fit right in there

I always put a small dob of sealant on the corners where the gasket goes up over the cam. Don't smear it over the whole gasket though. And as Royce pointed out, across the half moons too.

and b very carefull when tightning it up i recon the guy who i bought mine off must have wrenched it up cause when i went 2 undo mine 2 do the same thing the lug that ya bolt screws in2 the head broke clean off the head and had 2 replace head

well its leaking im pretty sure right at the back where it goes up over the cam.Yeh it is a 16 valve.so if i put sealant there where it goes up as yeah it didnt quite fit nicely,i should be right?But no sealant on rest of gasket?

Yep. Make sure the gasket is in properly and some small dobs on the square corners, where it goes up and over the cam hump.

yeah makes it easyier if ya remova ya dizzy and drop the rocker straight down as the small piece of gasket the goes ova ya cam hump has nothing holding it in place and can easyly slip forward leaving a gap
