Just wondering how often main seals leak on these things? Ontop of burning out my 2nd starter in as many weeks braking a nother t-case mount and bending a spring. Friday night on my way home from offroading I could smell burning oil. I pulled over and found there to be oil covering everything under the zook. I topped up the oil and limped it home. On saturday I took my starter off, replaced the t-case mount and looked for the oil leak. I tracked it down to the front main seal.
It was perfectly dry before I left Friday night. I know this because I changed the diff oils before I left and looked over the engine. On the last engine I had, I had to replace the rear main.
Just wondering if this is a common thing?
And to add to that it isn't just leaking its really pouring out at idle its a constant drip.

They're only as common as the front pulley seal leaking on any other car. My standard 1.3 now has 150000km's on the clock and is still bone dry. If you bought your 1.6 second hand, the seal might have becom dry and perished whilst the engine sat around and this may be why it is leaking now. In general, it's good practice to replace that seal whenever you replace the timing belt

If it keeps doing seals, then its most likely youre crank is bent or the cover is damaged.

is there any reason your crankcase would be pressurising?

i blocked my pcv valve (the hose from the top of the rocker cover that goes to the airbox) on the zook one day and did the same thing. i only blocked it as we needed some hose to get a mate going while out bush, i put some new hose on and the sealing lip returned to original position. never had a problem since.

those seals are only good for <5psi. So any type of pressure will cause them to pop.

Well on the way home it was a little low on power.
Your right not what I wanted to hear after the hassle I had getting it started. I really wasn't pushing it hard or anything and it was driving perfectly. I only took it out due to how well it was running. Well it is covered under a 3 month warranty if it is stuffed. What would you check first? I was going to replace the seal and see how it goes.

For fucks sake give it up already, plenty of you cunts spruke shit you havent got a hope in hell of backing up and people keep quiet I am getting a little sick of the fucking snide remarks that are creeping in around here

In short, if you havent got anything nice to say fuck off.
Read the fucking thread, asks if seal leaks are common, gets answered with no not really and a few other ideas and comments about well if there is a prob he can take it back

FWIW ive had seals fail strangely after a short time and it seems to take a few km to show up a leak cause it get held in the cover to an extent, guess once you get it apart youll know

This is true also. From memory (it's been a lonnng time since I've seen a motor pressurising the crankcase) if it were your motor, you'll probably find your air cleaner soaking in oil, and all you over gaskets and seals start leaking as well. Also, the pressure tends to sometimes blow the dipstick out.
first things first, replace the seal, maybe check and clean out the positive cranckcase ventilation valve, and ensure the engines not still building up excessive pressure.

Well its only 11 yrs... But as was stated above I was asking how common these seals were to leak on these cars.

yes royce for fucks sake , i mean who would expect a mechanic to actually check anything , just replace a faulty part without checking the cause of the failure.

so im not just here spurting crap and making snide remarks , i shall make a list for the OP

1. ok when you remove the crank sprocket , make sure it hasnt been flopping around and wearing into the oil pump housing damaging the seal
2. remove the seal and inspect the old seal , is it hard on the inner lip from age/heat, was it installed correctly previously , is it loose in the oil pump housing ?
3. check the sealing surface on the crankshaft, is it grooved or damaged , you may need a speedy sleeve if so !
4 if everything is fine and you find the seal is hard or damaged , replace the seal.
5 check the pcv valve , make sure that when the engine is running with the hoses removed , that is has vacuum and makes a clicking noise when you put your finger on and off of it.
6. make sure that the hoses and the t-piece for the hoses of the pcv valve are not blocked , and also the breather pipe for the rocker cover.

the same BASIC checks would apply for any engine , whether it be a lawn mower engine or a top fuel drag car.

im sorry if you got some sand in your vagina royce with my "snide" remark

I am pretty sure a top fuel car doesn't have a pcv valve 8)

Then why dont you fuck off and join your kind????? just a thought... or  if you must stay...

I aksed a simple question of how common are the front main seals to leak.

Before you dribbled your thoughts of wisdom you will see I had already said I am going to be checking the pcv valve.

If it was to hard for you to grasp the consept that I was at home sitting on my couch watching your mother blowing santa in fiji on my 52"LCD and not working on my zook at that exact time. When I asked, what would you check first... I am sorry I didnt put it into a clearer pretexted exact question that people like you that read into things way to far would understand. The question I was asking with that was is there anything common that people have seen that can cause it to leak that is not the run of the mill common problem like PCV blocked or the seal getting hard. I was asking was it common for the crank to get a wear line or was it common for the oil pump to shit it self and do crazy shit. I wanted to know if anyone has come accross anything different.

I was looking for the answers that was given before you gave your 1 cent.

I wasn't asking how to Diag anything

HAHAHAHAHA and to add to all of that where and when at any point did I ever say I was a good Mechanic hahahahahah HMMM NOPE NOT ONE SINGLE TIME.... infact I have said more then once I wasn't a good mechanic.

Have a good day bye bye now..... :thefinger: :finger: peaceout
