whats in there that stops play in the jack shaft / output shaft is there a bush or a bearing ? do i need to pull the gearbox apart to get in there ? could it cause stupid drive train vibrations under load.

Thay all have a "bit" of play, uni's are the main culprit.

Thay rely on the out put shaft bearing's & the in put of the jack shaft a lil bit, i'd be having a REAL good look at the uni's.

it's seems to be excessive play, when you say jack shaft input do you mean the spline ? it seems there there should be a bush of some description in the end of the gearbox. i saw a pic which looked like it has a metal bush in there with a spiral on it i dunno

No, where the seal run's, how much play side to side do you have ?(turning)
I have seen a lot of play in these with no prob's.
Some out put shaft spline's have a coating on them to reduce the play in them, mine has it. Can't remember what it is tho. but no bush

right well it seems to have a fair bit of side to side movement, i can not see anywhere else in my drive train that i could be having problems and i am so fucking sick of this vibration

Sam is it a harmonic vibration or constant?
Harmonic= fades in and out repeatedly at particular speeds.
Constant = well ummm constant.

harmonic, but generally feels rough for the rest of the time

different spots in different gears and more so under load, so takeoffs and up hill,accelerating around corners, even worse cornering up hills and such

Without going for a drive in it and feeling it firsthand all I can suggest is check stuff like:
Wheel balance.
Bent axle.
Buckled rim.
Bent tailshaft.
Uni's.... Did you replace that one I spotted yet?
Hubs unlocking properly.

Process of elimination... Unfortunately.

wheel balance is fine has had two sets of wheels on it both felt exactly the same.
bent axle... rear housing is still a bit gay so maybe that's it.
rims are fine same as wheel balance.
tail shaft had been balanced that was the first step i did ages ago.
both tail shaft unis are brand new matsuba ones and are perfect now did that day after.
hubs are fine we had a camera under the car and the front shaft did not spin.

Info so far tends to lead me to believe it is jack shaft or rear end..
Have you got mud or grit behind the drum on the axle flange?

nope no mud the vibe has been the same before and after rear wheel bearings and brakes being replaced and cleaned out. Got another jack shaft i can try ?

I have a WT leafy jackshaft here you can try/buy if it fits/works..

it's getting to the end now, i think i am down to one little niggling problem.

changed the jackshaft and tailshaft today, i am content the new tailshaft has made a difference and there is now no issue there, the jackshaft made no difference so mine must have been fine.

it is a vibration which comes in different times throughout the gears which seems to be worse under load and you can feel it through the transfer lever only not the gear lever.

is there anything inside the case (it has all new bearings in it) that could cause a vibration if not done properly ?
