[Stuey]

Need ideas on how to hold the crank pulley stationary (J20A) while removing the retaining bolt. Ive been to my two local auto stores and neither have anything. Tried a chain style oil filter wrench and just bent the crap outta it. Any other suggestions?

Pull off a manifold, stuff some rag in the cylinder bore.

If it is in the car, can you just put it in gear and rattle gun it?

Have you thort about h/brake on real hard & say, putting the g/bow in 4th??

Yeah manual.. and yes its my car. So ur suggesting chuck it in 4th, reefing up the handbrake hard and trying that way? I take it slight backward rotation on the crank wont do damage its only major rotation.

Cant be farcked pulling off manifolds lump, but thanks for offering up a suggestion.

It's worked for me for over 2 decades.

No damage, it essentially what the eng dose anyway

Just how much force can i get away with here. I've just been outside and tried your suggestion but I'm litterally hanging off my spanner and it aint moving. Tried tapping it with a hammer. Next idea is a breaker bar for leverage but I'm just worried I can overdo the pressure and stuff something..

Go the breaker bar & go hard!!!! When the bolt let's go you will hear a crack& unless you have broken the socket, it's loose.

Yeah, sorta. But I'm not going as full on as head off stuff we were discussing before. I just wanted to pull off the timing chain cover, check the state of things behind there, clean that up a bit and possibly fit new timing chain kit if need be. As it turns out it was worthwhile as there was handfulls (litterally)of sludge behind there. Tomorrow I'll clean that up, I'll grab a new timing chain kit on monday. Then I'll commence reassembling. I've left the head alone. I still have your words "FLUSH IT" echoing around my head. But at least getting rid of the shit around this timing chain will be less for the flush to do. Makes sense to clean it off while the sump pan is off.

Yeah, I grabbed the bracket on Friday arvo. Only cost $25 for the powdercoating which was good. So now the push is on to have it all done for the Perth Auszookers meetup. I'll do a bit each night when I can. Diff wont take long to get back in (Ive had that out so many times now I could probably do it with my eyes shut). But I need to clean this engine sludge off first then reinstall the oil pan before putting the diff in. Then i can FINALLY see if your Calmini bracket works. Then radiator, belts, fan etc etc. Another one of those projects I wish I'd never started......

Well you may as well keep on going now, you got the sump, timing cover & tappet cover's off, can't be much more hay?

I can't see you being happy till you do, but be prepared for a full rebuild as I'm sure you will find some thing else that is not to your liking in there.
