You'll need an adapter kit. PM BenT. He sells them for $200.

Righto. Would I do better to put the vitara trans. in with the engine? Would there be any issues mounting it up?

No way. Vut gearbox is massive compared to the sierra box. You have to widen the tunnel and then stuff around with driveshafts and transfer cases etc.
The adaptor kit is by far the easiest method.

no worries with power either, the sierra 1.3L box can take a fair amount of abuse

Or you can have the bell housing on the 1300 box modified to suit 1600 block.

I'm going to suggest using the 1.6 gearbox. There's no stuffing around with driveshafts or the transfer, and AFAIK the box will fit in the tunnel - It's the transfer adapter that doesn't clear the tunnel and that can be removed along with the vitara transfer. The sierra jackshaft will require shortening and there's a small amount of work on the gearbox mount. The sierra jackshaft fits in the back of the vitara gearbox once the transfer has been removed.
The advantage is that the vitara has a far better clutch, and the gearbox is likely to be in much better condition. Sierra 5 speeds in good nick are getting hard to find but vitara manuals are everywhere - best of all, it's probably already bolted to the engine. It seems silly to pull off a perfrectly good gearbox and bolt the engine to a weaker and older gearbox because it's "easier"
Just my 2C.
Joeblow has done a heap of 1.6 manuals into sierras. IMHO it's the only way to go if you want a manual 1.6.
Steve.

X2 Spot on Steve , though i think the tunnel may need a bit of a stretch ,but i could be wrong.

i have a 1.6 with the 1.3 i have the kit i found it the easy way out to fit the 1.6 you need to change a few things on the motor first like sump and pick up and so forth then you also have to change the 1.6 fly wheel with the 1.3 fly wheel other wise the 1.6 is to big its only little things like that but after that its straight forward ive had no problems with my box and the 1.6. hope this helps champ

The question was regarding fitting a 1.6 vit box to a 1.6 motor in a WT.
Re: where the gear stick sits and can it be altered.
1.3 boxes are geting harder to find in good condition. I have 4 boxes here and all have been rebuilt at some stage ie. roller bearings and seals and main input sharft needle. Maybe synchros have been done as well..
What I have found when they get noisy you pull em apart and find that the sharfts have been damaged due to the needle bearings on the gears not been changed.
Am taking a sharft down to a linisher to see if it will come up ok to rebuild.
Kit with needle bearings around $230 (all bearings and rear and front seal)
I would much rather fit a Vit 1.6 box to my mod 1.6 supercharged engine.
I am sure it will handle the power much better. So back to original question re. gearstick position.
Cheers to all

Me!!!
The selector as you would be able to see is bolted to the box, If you have a sierra box & shifter out compare the stick position to see how far out it is.
I don't see the problem with making a new hole.
You could bend the stick, unless you want to make a new selector box & rail.
Hope that help's
