Hey guys,

I have been lurking around these forums for a while now but this is my first post.

I recently bought a 2003 JLX Jimny (my 1st 4x4) so I can go fishing, shooting, camping and to get to some isolated places to collect rocks. I dont think I will be doing any serious 4x4ing anytime soon although it does look like a lot of fun.

I would like to put in a suspension kit to lift my jimny just to give a bit more clearance and to give a more comfortable ride. I have been looking at the 40 mm TD kit but I also want the lift to be noticeable (it has to look good) so maybe bigger, 60 mm? but its the same price as 80 mm? what to do?

I would also like to get some bigger wheels.

I know I want an ARB bull bar just in case a roo wants to play 'chicken' with me while traveling along a hwy.

I would also like to get a snorkel.

So here are my questions.

Do you think the a 40 mm lift kit would be enough for what i want to do? or go 60 or 80 mm?

what size tyres should i go for? I am thinking 215/75/15's

Also what does bigger tyres do to the gearing? and how is low range effected?

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Cheers

welcome dude

i have an 04 jimny wich is currently stock but i am planing pretty much the same mods as you. i have decided im going to go with the 80mm tough dog kit, i have done a bit of reseach and every1 on here that has the kit is happy with the performance. also ring your local 4wd shop as i got quoted 1400 from my local instead of teh 1600 on the web site.

make sure u post some pics of ur build :D

I have a 2009 Jimny. I've got the 40mm kit and it seems to serve me just fine - I have been giving serious thought to going to 60mm.

I have this belief in my head that if I go to 80mm it will be too unstable off road unless I get offset rims and biger tyres - something I am not willing to do.

I've got 215 75 15 and you do feel a little bit of power difference, but I got a new exhaust with extractors, a better air filter and a snorkel, which has made a big difference.

I've got an ARB winch bar. It is fantastic, but I have noticed that it does sag the front end suspension just a little, which is why I am thinking of more lift.

If you go to 235 75 15 most people seem to think it is ok, but you tend to ride the clutch a little more and lose a fair bit of power.

Perhaps think about changing your gearing if you are going down that path. You will definitely need more than 40mm for the 235's.

Basically take your car off road first and identify your needs from there - not the other way around like I did. I bought a nudge bar thinking it would look good, but as soon as I went offroad it was obvious that it was a pain in the arse coz I lost ground clearance at the front.

thanks for the replys guys,

yeh i think i should go and do some 4x4ing first to see what i need. My thoughts were 40 mm is not really that much higher and therefore the effect is negligible so maybe go to 60 but i dont want to make it too high in case of rollovers because of my inexperience.

I think i need to go to a good track near perth and get some practice. I have read that the powerlines are a good place.

would it be possible for me (inexperienced) to get around there and have a bit of a drive on the tracks??

I would have a friend come along in his patrol but he is also relatively inexperienced. Maybe I could tag along with some of you guys one day?

Vermin: I saw a picture of your jimny with the 40mm lift and 215's, and i think it looks really good. If you have parked near a stock jimny is it easy to tell it has been lifted? its just i havent seen a lifted jimny in person only on pics. Also extractors sound like a good idea for a bit more efficiency and power. Where can i get some put on and how much would it set me back?

I will put pics up each time something new goes on my jimny.

thanks again.

Gday man this what i've done with mine i have a 2006 JLX 40 lift with 30mm spacer in the front and 15mm in the rear the reason of 30mm in the front i have a ARB bullbar and it dropped 15 mm in the front now she even as also runny 235/75r15 and have no drames with rubbing i suggest a locker in the front or back it makes a hell of a difference i have rear locker pretty much goes anywhere .

I didn't realize how much difference it made until I was following my wife who was driving it and was alongside another Jimny - It is sitting a fair bit higher - also consider the difference in height a taller set of tyres will make. I personally would recommend a 60mm myself. I wish I had done that as the ARB bar does make it sit a little lower and there is a slight amount of rubbing when the springs are under compression.

Whereabouts in Perth are you? I am way NOR in Clarkson, but I frequent Powerlines and Wilbinga (north of Two Rocks) a fair bit and you are more than welcome to join me sometime.

Both places are awesome to learn skills and see what mods need to be done. Wilbinga is basically sand dunes and a bit of beach driving - nothing dangerous out that way really.

What brand and where did you get extractors from ? I've been looking for some for my 2008 model Jimny.

I'm in E. Vic Park, just south of the city. Clarkson is a fair trek, but my girlfriends brother lives at quinns rock so sometimes we spend a few nights up there with them.

If I were to buy the 60 mm TD kit is there anything else I have to get? Are they easy enough to install? I wouldnt be able to but a friend has all the equipment.

I dont think I want to get 235's. I think i will settle with 215's.

I should sell my older car soon and I am starting a new job just for the uni holidays so i should have some cash to burn. better to spend it on cars or camping stuff then maccas or other random stuff.

It would be cool to tag along as I dont really have anyone in the family to learn off. All my uncles with the knowledge live way up North (the Pilbara).

The extractors are Redback - same dude in Brizzie that makes Genie as well.

http://www.suzisport.com/shop/

Look under performance and select Jimny - down the bottom of the page.

$450. I have a friend who build the exhaust - $250.

I think you need extended break lines - outdoor auto sell em or you could get Suzi Store in Midland to build you some.

I cannot speak for installation as I am not mechanically minded, but I have heard that it's not that hard. The 60mm TD kit comes with everything else that you require.

You are more than welcome to head up this way for a hoon around the dunes - it's probably the best way to learn the basics without getting out of your depth.

Welcome to Auszookers and the Jimny fraternity dm90.

I've had my Jimny for almost 9 years and have played around with a few different configurations in that time.

This pic shows mine with a total of 80mm over stock, suspension lift via 40mm springs that have sagged by 10mm and 50mm spacers and running 235/75R15 tyres

Image

This pic has the same lift with 215/75R15 tyres

Image

This is my Jimny with 215s and 80mm lift next to my wife's stock Jimny

I think that the 215s are the better choice if you plan to stick with stock gearing but when you have a bit more experience and practice 4WDing 235s will be OK with stock gears.

The 215s will only put your gearing out by about 6%, the only negative is that your diffs will often scrape on the mound in the middle of a lot of trails, sometimes stopping your forward motion.

There's plenty of info in my build thread about what I've done although you'll need to skim through a bit of general conversation. My signature has a link the the 1st page.

thanks Zukenutter,

I really do like the look of your zook with the 80mm lift and 235's, and I have been reading the info you've been putting up for a while now (as a guest) as i find it very helpful.

what actually happens when the gearing 'goes out'? does it rev harder?

I am thinking of maybe going for the 60 mm TD lift with 215s. that way i wont change the ride too significantly and if i want bigger wheels i can just get 20mm spacers.

But my instinct then says 'the 80 mm lift kit is the same price, so go more for same amount of $$$$'

cheers

the change in gearing actually means less revs. The 1.3 can't operate in it's power range as effectively. It will use more fuel, and on the highway 5th gear won't get you up a hill. 4th, 5th, 4th, 5th, 4th, 5th. 215s are OK just the 235s and bigger that it really becomes noticeable.

Eventually I'll buy a set of 80mm springs but if you are predominantly going to use it for touring 60mm will probably be more practical and less strain on driveline angles

I got my jimny booked in for an ARB bull bar just before christmas.

I was told a OME lift kit would cost me around $750 and about $250 to install.

Is that a good price? i could get a mate to install it so i would save a bit of cash there.

the OME suspension gives 40mm lift but i still cant decide whether to go for 40 or 60 mm. any suggestions??? like i said before, the vehicle will be used for everyday driving as well camping trips and for fishing, shooting etc.

I will settle for a good pair of 215 AT's.

I saw a jack the other day, that is like a bag that packs flat and you attach it to the exhaust to pump it up. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them? are they good?

cheers

I would say that in the long run you'll be happier with the 60mm lift. It will settle a little over time anyway. My springs have sagged 10-15mm (not sure) over 8 years. Also you should plan to have the front settle even fourther under the weight of the heavy steel ARB bar.

I took this pic of mine and parfittrons Jim the other day which shows that his front has sagged at least 10mm from the weight of the ARB bar.

Image

Also check out vermin's latest post he also mentions sagging from the bar weight.

I've seen these used on sand, great idea. Don't know about other situations though.

Cheers Zukenutter,

do you know how much lift, and what size wheel parfittron has in the above photo? I have looked at his build thread but cant seem to find the exact specs.

its just that they look a little bigger then yours, but if you have 235s then what does he have?

also when going on long trips where do you keep the extra fuel? i was just going to have two 20 L jerry cans behind the seats.

hi mate.

I am running 235's in the old pattern BFG MT's.

Some tyres will vary in actual size depending on brand - but I think its more or less just a visual trick in that photo. The white wheels look much larger than the same size in black - and the tyres on zukenutters blend into the black car more - so its hard to see the exact size.

Lift/tyrewise our cars are pretty much the same

okay, thanks.

A few more questions for everyone:

People talk about a 2" OME lift, but when i asked the local OME dealer he said it only lifts it 40 mm, am I missing something?

with the UHF radios, do you guys actually use them? I wouldnt know what to say or who to talk to if i had one.

Where to put the jerry cans? inside or on the roof?

people often cant convert cm/mm to inches very well.

People think that 40mm = 2 inches. There is only the 1 OME kit available - however I was of the belief it was 45mm or so (closer to 2")

Jerry cans legally have to be carried in a vehicle from what I understand. I was told roof or rear mounting externally is illegal due to danger in the event of an accident.

UHF's are great for doing tracks with others or when getting lost if your by yourself.

If you go out with 3-4 cars and need to discuss things on the go, its much easier than stopping and what not.

I am going to buy an air compressor this weekend, but how do i know if its a 'good' one. is it just because its expensive?

there is one in the current Perth super cheap auto catalogue on page 8. it is $45.49 with 35% off.
specs: 140 psi, 14 amp, up to 25 LPM(not sure what that is) & 4 m lead with battery clips.

also there is one at the top of the page thats $109. 150 psi, 30 amp, up to 72 LPM, 2.4 m lead, 6m coiled hose.

which one would be better?

if its just a matter of the cheaper one taking longer to pump up then i will get that one.

I am also getting a bull bar put on the jimny on monday so i will start a thread in the rigs forum.

That would be the better one, LPM is liter's per minute, the bigger liter's the faster it will inflate your air bed

hey guys recently i bought an 03 jimny that had done 138 000 km.

but in the last week the clutch feels.................different.

i dont really know how to explain it but when i push the clutch in it sorta feels like its 'jumpy'. like running your nail across a series of ridges or ribs.

so its like smooth, resistant, smooth, resistant etc but very fast. almost like a vibration.

also when the jimny is idling and in neutral i can hear a rattle noise but when i put the clutch in it stops, then when i release the clutch it starts again

i guess thats the best i can explain it with out actually talking to you guys.

anyways, my question is, has my clutch had it? Is it easy to replace? as i dont really have the money for a new one (just got an ARB bar)

clutch is probably on the way out.
that noise will be the thrust bearing which you will get with the clutch kit.
not overly hard to do. but it would still suck having to do it with no hoist.

try replacing the clutch cable, its probably stiff and had water in it over the years. there not very expensive and will make the jim much more enjoyable to drive to.

I've done this before, and when the cable was out it felt free but must bind when inder load
