How much compression or slip should be allowed on a rear tailshaft with the car sitting normally on flat ground?

A better example would be a stock sierra. Need some measurements?

depends on tailshaft length, tailshaft angle and the distance the suspension compresses up to the bumpstops. you will need these measurements to get a rough idea.

Talking to an old mechanic at work, he reckons there would be bugger all compression, as when the spring bends, it lengthens.
I reckon it would lengthen when the diff flexes down too...

Hilux's are the opposite. They need alot of travel up front because of their shackle mountings also. Alot of my mates have popped the shafts out.
Suzy has never popped a shaft. Hmm. I wonder how much is left in flexing though?
