hey all,
Went for a bit of a trip along the beach the other day, went to shift to low range but no go. Tried several times on and off the beach but it just seemed that there was something stopping it, had a look under the car for stick jamming it as i had been through some timbered areas before the beach, but all appered well. I've never had any dramas with the transfer before apart from shifting to 2wd to 4wd and vice versa, which i guess is common for 4wd's. Any ideas what it may be and what to check for?

I had this happen with my sierra and the problem was the selector rails were out of alignment in the transfercase. (removed transfer lever, used screwdriver to re-align rails and it didnt do it again.)
Hopefully yours is as simple as that.

have ya checked ya bush under the stick? could be stuffed? (see bruce for a new one )

I was gonna say if you bent the transfer case mounts the stick may be hitting the body stopping it from going in to gear, but you'd probably get a big vibration if the mounts were bent.

This arvo i removed the shaft boot from inside, had a bit of a look around. The nylon/plastic ball at the bottom of the shaft appears to be ok (small amount of play), selector shaft doesnt appear to be hitting body, transfer mountings in good nick. It just appears that the selector wont move forward to shift into low range.
Mandy - How do you re-align the selector rail? Im guessing from the selector shaft at the front, it should be aligned i guess vertically as possible?
Steve - How much play is expected normally in the bush under the stick?

if the bush is still there and in one peice i think it should still work ok....

dont confuse the nylon sleeve on the very botton of the stick with the one the ball of the stick pivots on

it doesnt come out with the stick it stays in the hole, I'll bet its worn away and isnt there

what happens is it wears away, the stick falls down into the hole and pushes the selector forward due to the angle of the selector rod

This is a very informative thread for replacing bushes. (with Pics!)

As for the selector rails, i'm sure Royce would know. A friend of mine did it for me and i wasnt really paying much attention It only took a couple of minutes.

Mt new transfer case also does what Mandy is describing. It's easy to fix but painful when it happens. It's happened to me 4-5 times now. What can be done to stop it?

Just had my transfer case lock up and followed the instructions on the thread

and it only took me 15 minutes and I only smacked my head under the car once.

So its only a bush that is causing this? How hard is it to replace. VERY keen to fix mine it does this all the time

easy as, just take the lever out and stick the new bush in and replace the lever. The transfer gear lever is a bit more fidly to get out as compared to the gearstick, but pretty straight forward.

To get the lever out you have to push down and twist!

no the bush goes in the housing and the ball section of the stick pivots on it

the transfer case stick bush goes under the ball on the gear stick.

the gearbox stick bush goes on top of the ball on the stick.

is that confusing enough ?
