sikkk as bruh!

Anyway, being 18 and first car and all, i want to put a bit of a system in my car thats cheap. I wouldn't mind a sub, but I dont wanna spend heaps cos chances are come winter next year it'll get drowned heh.

A mate has offered me a 12" sub (Boss Audio 1290) for 80$ but i'm not sure if its any good or not. I also have a 4chan Povervox amp (4x140w RMS).

Any suggestions for loud, cheap sound without going too bad on quality??

Oh, I forgot to add that I currently have a decent(ish) headunit that I run my 2 dash speakers in (4inch) and the 2 door speakers (6inch), and the headunit supports the port for an amp.

ive got polk audio 6 inches and 4 inches off my head unit and ive had 2 12 inch kickers then went a 15 inch kicker now onto 2 12 alpine type R's they are wonderful. If you a cheap option look for kicker comp vr i think thats the right ones should be black and yellow had those and they always came back for more and got wetish a few times. These were all in a lwb vitara but be warned you will never get rid of the rattles no mater how much you silicone foam and tape

Did a bit of reading and yeah, looks like Boss isn't that great. i thought I was wicked buying a 5500w amp, but then I learn't about a little thing called RMS and yeah....basically 140w per channel isn't much at all!.

Send me some pics for sure, im very interested in it all.

what you have now given that the sub fits in a slim line box out of a ute or you can make a custom box will work you could bridge that amp you have now if its bridgable and then run your speakers off your head unit that way all you will need is a wiring kit from wow or where ever and run that then get some decent lill speakers and put them in running off the head unit thats what ill be doing. i done that with my last car running a bigger sub and amp though and entered in sound comps and came 8th out of like 60 people

Zook?? Rattles??? Didn't think they'd ever be used in a sentence without each other lol!

I was gunna go dual subs, but then I came to a point where I wanna do other stuff first, but I still wanna spend a bit of money getting a "decent" system....oh, and I have a softtop.

Ummm, I think I understand.
I've taken the back seats out of my SWB because I can only legally have one passenger anyway here in Vic on my read P's, so box side isn't really much of an issue. But in the same sense, if I can pick up a decent box + amp + sub thats actually gunna sound good and not fall apart for a little more, I reakon that'd be better then buying a dodge sub i'm gunna blow up in a week or two.

You need to remember how small the interior is of any Zook.
I enjoy my music and do like to crank it up, however I don't feel the need to let everyone else know what I am listening to.
I have spent a shade under $200 on my new Sierra sound system and am more than happy.

Head end I have a Kenwood KDC-MP243
Single Slot CD player AM/FM Tuner and has input to connect my Ipod Touch
$120 on special from SCA.

Front Speakers are JVC CS-426 On special at Repco for $30
Rear Speakers are JVC CS-626 On special at Repco for $50

Very happy with the sound it gives out, granted may not be a massive amount of bass but fills my car with great sound.

I have learnt with car audio who are you trying to play the music to? Yourself in the car, or everyone within a 4 mile radius?

Cheers.

all you need is a decent head unit. speakers will get destroyed regularly so dont over spend on them. I used to run some 120w 6in in the front kickers and some JVC 270w 6x9s in the rear door. plenty loud enough untill i got the silverstone extreem tyres. then i added an amp and a home theatre passive sub and some surround speakers i had lying about at home. total cost was less than $400

Ohg and to fit the 6x9 ya need spacers

def agree bud but also not all the more exspensive stuff is beter i got jbl which is cheapish but quality is amazing i loved it and plus even though you can only have one taking out seats is also illegal you need a mod plate for it :P but in that case get a decent box and sub and amp just dont mount the amp where it can get wet like under drivers seat ect but you can get a decent set up for cheap but few more dollars can go a long way to in how long it lasts especially if its going to be bouncing around offroad you can also look on sites like boost cruising lots of rice burners and sound systems and what not on there. personal prfrence is jbl sub and amp packages rock!!

my sterio is absoultly spot on in my opinion for a zook..

Us audio headunt.. no cd player BUT usb and SD card reader... this may not sound cool but SD card with 2gig of music on it.. it NEVER skips or stuffs up.. at a grand total of $55 (yes brand new) from autobarn

2x 6x9's in the rear door.. cheep plastic cone ones.. so i can hose them..

2x 4inch plastic cone ones in the kick pannels..

all up was like $150 and it is SWEET!!! never deal with wet speekers or skiping cd's again! the headunit has been hosed so many times and the speekers!! all good!

@Shaggy: Just a shave under 4miles :D....Nah, I understand what your getting at mate, but I'm just looking for quality parts for reasonable prices. I'm all for secondhand parts, because I love the mud and the water loves to be on the inside of my poor lil zook.

@IN2DEP: Yeah, I know roughly where Bacchus Marsh is. Portlands so very...exciting. Ever been up and down the trainline tracks? Insane this year when a few sections flooded and every weekend a new car was getting towed out by a tractor!

@Built4thrashing: I was going to buy the 6" ones at repco that were $40 on special, but they didnt have any in stock and they offered me larger ones for a lesser price ($70?) but I felt the door speakers would be the first to get wet and wouldnt be wise of me to spend that much. Cheers for the spacers tip though.

@Lukes_89: True, expensive doesn't nessicarly mean quality....but in terms of spending a bit more to get something that'll last a bit longer, i'm keen for that. And yeah, I REALLY should go get it plated but I had no idea what it mean't until last weekend :s

i pulled the stezza out of my old car but been to lazy to fit it. i got an alpine cda6833 head unit, set of type r splits, eclipse 2 channel amp cant rember what rms it is and 2 type s 12s in a box with a 400rms vpower amp. im not putting the subs into the jimny as they wont fit :( would love to but unless i rip out the seats then it wont happen. im going to buy a decent 4 channel amp and set of 6x9s to put in the back door.

in my other car i got more audio gear than u can poke a stick at. really a wase of money but oh well im happy :) got a double din alpine hu, 2 sets of jl audio 6.5" splits running off a 400rms 4 channel v12 amp, 2 jl audio 12" subs running of a 1000rms v12 amp. best thing was i got 1 amp for 300 and the other for 400 :D love having connections!! its sounds so good!!

Just doing a bit of reading around, how tight do the specs on the boxes need to be? I know I can get a hand making a box, but do the box specs really make an impact on how good/bad the sub will be?

yes the box will make a big differance to how the sub will sound, u should be able to find the size of box required for a sub on the website, some sites like jl have plans that give you the exact dimensions needed to build that box. thats how i did mine just range a timber place and ordered the mdf and they cut it to size so all i had to do was cut the sub holes in it and glue and screw it together.

Hey Shaggy,

Yes the inside of a Zook is pretty small, and you really dont need a High wattage amp in that confined space, it will sound loud anyway !

I have a Kenwood KDC - MP243 has 4 x 50watts, bought from Auto One on special for $130, it has CD/Mp3/WMA and AM/FM radio, and iPod connection, with connection on the rear for Sub amp, its not a sub bassy system, but still has plenty of bass !
Kenwood 4inch 130watt front $40, and Kenwood 6inch 160watt rear $60.
So $230 all up, and i am happy with it, and i can get the Vit rattles just from this, lol, the volume only goes to 30, and most of the time i have it on 25 !
Even though its a basic setup, and even though it was not my intention, it can still be heard pretty well outside my Vit, lol... I have had some people at the traffic lights, alongside my Vit, boppin away and giving the thumbs up, lol, my 15 yr old daughter thinks its a pretty good sound system !

So you really dont need a big expensive, high wattage system to get good sound !

peaceout

I don't spend much on head units now ever since my windscreen leaked and killed a $700 head unit

Used to run a sub in my sierra (when it was a 1.3) and at idle as you turned the volume up you could see the the needle on the tacho drop!

I ended up buying a 12" 1300w Sony Explod including the box for 50$. It's a 380RMS sub, and i'm using my 4chan amp. I've bridged ch1 and ch2 for a total of 280RMS so thats good enough for me.

Only thing I was gunna do was run ch3 for a left 6x9 and ch4 for the right one and set it on a HFP. Only prob is my headunit doesn't have another 2 RCA slots to run ch3 and 4 :(
