16 valve is mpfi (multi point fuel injection) and 8 valve is carby sometimes its tbi (throttle body injection)
They are both the same displacement the difference is in the head and the injection & carby. The number of valves does not change the size of the engine.

No, thats jsut what they are reffered to as both can be G16A and B as can the 8 valve
they have multipoint injection
16 valves obviously
different head design
probably different valve timing
different compression

o ok dont really wanna have to play around with efi so i might just have to go with the 8 valve
as i dont really wanna have to put to much in to the zook as i dont really wanna have to spend to much to get it running
i have to do a new fuel tank to if i go efi dont i???
sorry for so many questions

You can use a swirl pot with a lifting pump priming that and an external efi pump from the swirl pot to the engine. But in a zook theres not alot of room for that setup and can be quite noisy.
I run an 8 valve in my sierra had it running the morning after i pulled the original out about 4 hours work. works good alot more tourqe but i'd still go 16 valve mpfi if i had the money and time

is that including adapter ?
what about your clutch ?
I got my 8 valve with adapter and new clutch for 650
make sure you get the 1.6 carby with it

put the money towards gearing, because your not even close to the funds needed for an engine conversion

You have to use 1.3 fly wheel and clutch.
You have to modify the 1.3 oil pickup and use that with the sump on the 1.6
you need an adapter which is 200
leaves you approximately 400 for an engine
what is wrong with your current engine?

i thought about just rebuilding it as its lost alot of compression and it just has no go
but people have told me for wat i need to do to the 1.3 i would bew able to buy a 1.6 and use that

A worn and abused 1.6 wont be any better than i good 1.3 imo. I bought mine because it was there and cheap otherwise i would have just got another 1.3. You will be able to find a good 1.3 for 600 but 400 for a 1.6 would be pushing it.

gearing doesnt help when the motor has trouble taking off in first gear

Fucken oth it will make a differance, if you have bigger then standerd tyres and don't fix your
Gearing then you are wasting your cash.
Allways fix gearing first before any other driveline mods. If you read a bit rather then
Posting shit all the time you would know this

Have to agree with this aswell gearing has to be fixed, a slightly bigger engine wont fix the problem. You have probably fit bigger tyres since owning the vehicle and now think the engine is tired when its really your gearing thats out.

x3, gearing is the answer!
i have nearly 100kw & with out gearing it was useless on & off road!
oh yeah search n00b!

In my honest opinion replacing a carby 1.3 with a 1.6 carby does not make any sense, you are far better off going for a 1.6 EFI for simplicity, reliablity and ease of maintenance (yes it is simpler in my opinion, you do not have to worry about a carby causing no end of trouble as I have had with my 1.3).
Furthermore you can generally find EFI motors that are newer, in better condition and that have less km.
Motor: $800 - 1200
Adapter: $200
Extractors/Exhaust $300
You then may need to work out the following:
Starter Motor
Wiring
Fuel
Sump + Pickup
You are looking at $1500 at the very least to do a decent job.

Gearing+sierra=fucking awusome
The first 1.3 I had was so under powerd that I used to
Tow my trailer in 3rd gear on the hwy(32's and 1ltr trans)
When I put a set of 6.5's in I could hold 100kph in 5th.

Here is an option that has yet to be put forward.
Find yourself a 1.6 16v short engine(just block crank pistons)
get your head shaved by 50 thow and at the same time replace the valve seals. Build yourself a hybrid 1.6 with your 1.3 head. It is the smart cheap way to get more power right now and setting up for the future. When you save more money up you can then replace the head with a EFI set up.
This is what I have in my sierra. You can ask anyone that comes out with me that I have no problem in the bush. I do have problems cruising at speed over 90 but that is because I run 33s and have not finished all my gearing. Mine is not a everyday driver and when I put 30s on it I have no problem with highway speeds.
You will be supprised how many 1.6 16v blocks there are out there all due to the head problems the Vitara's have.
All up my new set up cost me $950
That included
Block $220
VRS $200
Headwork $200
1.6 tbelt/waterpump $150
adaptor kit $180
Everything else was a swop over from the 1.3L
The only extra I would strongly suggest would be a clutch fan off the Vitara I picked mine up for $40
My block came with the 1.6 altinator and drive belt, you will need these as the 1.6 runs rib belts not the V belt like the 1.3L
As I already said with doing it this way you get your more power and it sets you up for whan you can afford to go EFI
And yes it works dont lissen to the people that say it won't you can shave up to 70 thou off without hitting anything but then you will be messing with how long the t-belt is and its not worth the hassle 50 was enough to give a little more power without any clearance or timing problems.

But as has been said over and over gearing will help you out more then anything. If your engine is in bad need of replacement from oil usage or blowby blahh blahh blahhh then do the engine first but only if that is the case.

hay dave are you sure that 50th off the head gives more power? taking
that much off a head would in my oppinion just turn it into a pinging crap
box. did you cc your head after machining it? i think that that is bad advice
when ya consider it is a potentially 20+ year old head that has probly
allready been machined in the past so 50th soon turns into 80th or
bigger. then there is the fuel quality, 98oct fuel may still not prevent
pinging and may not widely avalable in frendly cousin land.
i think ball has done a bit of dyno time while playing with compression so it
would be interesting to here his opinion of this.

that is the exact case thats y i said gearing aint gonna help when the motor is about to go bang as its sucking oil like nothing else and blows more smoke than a 4 pack a day smoker
