Hello,
I booked my car in yesterday for a clutch replacement and crossed my fingers because without fail, every time i deal with mechanincs the give me the runaround.
But anyway, this might be legit so was just checking before i make an idiot of myself.
I took the car down yesterday morning and the mechanic said that it should be ready for about 4 oclock and he'd give me a call.
Didnt get a phonecall all day so figured it will be ready saturday.
This morning he calls and says that he's having issues with the car and says its the thrust bearing causing noise in the new clutch so he has to take the gearbox back out and do it over.
I havent seen the bill yet so am not going to assume anything.
But if he charges me 8 hours labour when he quoted 4, is it possible that he's messing with me?
Are the "thrust bearings" usually checked and replaced if worn on a standard clutch replacement?
Is the thrust bearing also known as the spigot bearing? Because when researching the clutch replacement i read that the spigot bearing should be checked and replaced during a standard replacement so if this is what happened can i ask him why it wasnt checked and replcaed before putting the gearbox back in?
If he does try to over charge me for a simple mistake on his part, is there anything i can do about it legally?
Hopefully he is just trying to buy more time because he never got around to it yesturday. Plus he sounded nervous on the phone so maybe i should have asked more questions before he went arhead with it but i was still asleep.
Thanks for any info.

thrust bearing is normally supplied in a clutch kit and any mechanic worth his weight will replace it.

Doing a clutch, and not replacing the thrust bearing is like doing an oil change and not putting on a filter.

Well, i just got another call from him with a new story.
He said its not the thrust bearing causing the noise.
He said something about a worn shaft that needs to be replaced and new gearbox bearings and parts. Basically he said it was a new gearbox withoutout replcing the gears and a new shaft. Cant remember if it was a thrust shaft, drive shaft or whatver.
Some shaft so they might be legit.
He'll call back soon with a new quote.

No noise before.
I think it was the input shaft.
He offered 2 ways of doing it. Shortening the shaft but that may not work. Or replacing the shaft and he said that if you do that you are better off replcing other parts in the gear box.

Sounds suspect to me. What car is this for?
The spigot bearing is a bearing that is in the flywheel that supports the end of the gearbox input shaft.
A thrust bearing is a term that means a bearing that can take lateral forces (parallel to the shaft going through the bearing).
So the mechanic could be talking about a number of different bearings, hard to say.

if its the spigot bearing and the input shaft is worn it will make a noise because my input shaft is worn where the spigot bearing goes i can only just hear it tho

My Vit has 444000k's and the final out put sharft is worn and it sings lik a pig sqeeling. has been like it for the past 100.000 and still going and it get a work out.
Seems strange there was no noise before, you would hope he did machine the flywheel and replace the spigot bearing as they are standard thing you do. As for the throwout bearing that is replaced with the kit.

Mate. Mechanics like to bring things back to new. Business is bad for them. Just tell him to do what he was told to do. Next he'll tell you the motor is US and needs a rebuild. My elderly mother took her car into a 'franchise" !! They said the front pads had 1 mm left on them . I pulled the wheels off. They were half worn. Bullshit Mr Hann Mann. [ Quote from old Bruce Lee movie.]. Lesson. Don't trust the bastards.

Yeah, but if it really is worn, i'll be getting the noise.
I guess it needs to be fixed regardless.
As long as he's not charging for stuff i dont need, i dont mind bringing my transmission back to new.

If you mean Suzistore in Midland, i have found them to be nothing but honest !
I was quoted so much for some repairs, and it actually came in under what they quoted, so thats all they charged me...
Suzistore know their Zooks, thats all they work on, they know what they are doing, and talking about !
If its not the Suzistore he took it to, i would strongly suggest that he take it to Suzistore !

I'd ask to see or hear the problem in person, then go from there.
Seems odd that it makes a noise after a new clutch.

If the old clutch was only running at a small percentage of what it used to, when the clutch is fixed and running properly, it can put added pressure on other things, that are not running so well, so if there are any other parts needing to be repaired, a fully working clutch may make them fail, its sort of like a knock on effect...

Fuck can you lot try and stop making up reasons for a half story already
there is no thrust bearing when dealing with a clutch, there is a spigot bearing ($5 part) that you need but doesnt come with the kit
there is also a throwout bearing that comes with the kit, its bigger and is what pushes against the pressure plate fingers to release the clutch plate
I bet its making a faint whirring noise when the pedal is out and none when the pedal is in like its an input bearing in the box, dont worry they all do it, they all go away, you can even search here there will be about 4 threads about it
your box isnt likely to need work, tell him to put it back together, adjust the thing properly and be happy with life

I would consider taking it away and getting a few quotes from other mechanics! I think knowing a good mechanic (even a backyarder) is one of the best tradies to know!!!!!

im assuming he is talking about the through out bearing when he means thrus bearing, this is on the end of the clutch fork and is wat puts the pressure on the pressue plate to engae the clutch. to test is simple enough, just put the clutch pedal in and see if u get an noise then take it out and if the noise goes away then its the though out bearing. as Zachius said its hard to know what he is talking about.
if he isnt changing the bearings while he is doing it then its not good, most cluch kits come with them. i think best thing to do would be to get hiim to put it back together and get a second opinion. if there was no noise before and there is a noise after then he might have done somthing wrong therefore he should fix it at no cost to you. if he is an aresehole about it go elseware.

yeah, 99% of mechanics make the rest of them look bad
Cant remember one time in the past 10 years i came away from a mechanic and felt satisfied and didnt feel like having dealt with the local mafia.

I think the problem is, you take a car to a mechanic because you have no idea, and then can't help but wonder if you're getting shafted or not with the diagnosis. When I used to work in a car workshop, a lot of customers would come in for a tune up, and I would'nt tune them because there were other underlying factors as to why their cars were running like shit, eg carby problems, manifold leaks and loose timing belts. When the customer was told to get the problem fixed before I'd tune it, the odd one would really get the shits because I refused to 'tune' their car and thought we were trying to shaft them. We had to give a 6 month 10000km warranty with our tunes, so unless I knew the car would be running perfect when the customer came to pick it up, I would not touch it.
Having said that, I think Royce is dead right about the noise in the gearbox. Ask them to put it back together, and drive it as is for a little while. The noise will probably go away, and if not, take it to a couple of differant shops for a quote. Ask your friends who they're taking their cars to. I won't deny there are some shithouse mechanics out there, but there are some brilliant ones out there too.
