Hey guys,
On my Sierra I'm running 235/75/r15's and most
likely sometime in the not so near future get a set of 31's,
would the 4.16 set from low range off road by low enough
to run 31's on a daily basis? Im just running standard coily diff gears,
but I will putting a WT TC in with the new gears installed.

Any info would b great.

I have the 6.5s and I did have 33s and they were great for that but now I have 31s and they are a little to low for my liking. I am having to do 75% of things in 2nd or 3rd gear. But I guess to low is better then too high. Just be sure to replace your transfer mounts with stronger ones if you go the 6.5s or you will brake the passanger side.

EXAMPLE: 3000RPM in 4th gear high (1.2:1 transfer) on 27" tyres with 4.1:1 diff will give 78.8 km/hour and a crawl ratio of 4.92:1

3000rpm in 4th gear high range (4.9:1 transfer is 1.4 in high) on 31" tyres will give 77.5km/hour with a crawl ratio of 5.74:1.

So YES if you fit 4.9 gearset to transfer and 31" tyres you will be very slightly lower than standard high range gearing.
Don't expect the car to go as well as it did with little tyres though as larger tyres add a fair bit of drag.

I'd go the 6.5:1 gears which are another 4% lower in high range.

6.5's and 31" tyres work well and is what a lot of people run. i cant understand
why people dont like useing all the gears in the gearbox, there is nothing
wrong with useing 4th low especally when i means that you have a 1st low gear
that crawls really well. in first low my car will idle up a 900mm step and
will still tow a trailer at 100kph in 5th. sierra's have 12 gears and i like to use them all

Thanks for the info, I think I'll be going towards the 4.9s.
Simply for the $$ factor. I do have a 4.1 diff center here, if I can
chase up a rear 4.1 I'll put that in the back along with the
4.9 transfer gears.

I run 3.9 diff gears and a 4.16 transfer at 100 it revs at 3500rpm and in low i have to use first when crawling and still need to ride the clutch (not like standard though) But id like to be lower off road.
As shep said there are more than 2 gears that are there to be used go for the 6.5's

jmo though

.

Hmmm. Not really any options for you coily guys as far as gearing goes. Unless you swap in a leafy transfer case with gears. Even a 1 litre case would be an improvement......

And I'm pretty sure there are no R&P swap available for coilys either.

I've been told that jimny R&P's will fit, but most of them are 3.9's, which is the same as yours. Apparently there are some 4.1 jimny ratios out there in autos, but I am yet to see or hear of a jimny owner that actually has them.

I've stripped 2 jimny auto diffs (G13BB and M13A) and both were 3.9, not 4.1.

Best of luck :D

I was lucky enough to score a Jimny front diff with a
4.1 center. that will be going in when I change the front
suspension. I just need a sierra 4.1 rear.

I have a Sierra 4.1 rear and front (complete) as well as a rear missing a centre you can have for $50.

Sounds good,
When you say complete. Is that the complete diff
or the complete center?

I have 1 complete rear diff...Drum to drum including 4.1:1 centre.
1 complete front diff... Disc to disc including centre.
1 complete rear diff missing centre.
$50 the lot.

Well I'll get that off ya.
I would say take it tomorrow to the GH
but neither of us have the room for 3 diffs.

I'll PM ya.

Iam running factory 4.1 diff gears with 6:5 tcase gears and find it way to low onroad, my engine is reving at 4000rpm at 85km/phr in 5th gear with 31's on.
I have considered putting the 1ltr tcase back in for hwy driving, or just sticking some 33"s on, its all right around town but if i have to drive more than an hour it gets annoying.

Yeah, that would be low. I'm looking at running 4.1 diff gears
with either 4.16 or 4.9 transfer case gears with either 30's or 31's.

Says he's running 31's but I bet that "85km/h" is on the "way out" speedo not real road speed.

4000rpm at 100kph is what i am aiming for, i reckon there would be plenty of
power at those revs to hold ya speed on most hills even when towing.
g13's love to be reved and i think that they need to be reved to stay happy.

Just another random question.
are the WT transfer case mounts exactly the same
as NT transfer case mounts? Im just looking at doing the
leafy transfer case into my coily. Everywhere Ive looked, guys
are using WT TC's, just that I have a NT sitting in the back yard
gathering dust. So i was thinking of stealin the case out of that and
warping it into the coily.

In the next couple of days/weeks i might look at
puttin the NT transfercase into my coily.

See how it goes n then get a set of 4.9s for it.

whats your reasoning behind getting the 4.9's ? 6.5's are cheaper and have a lifetime warranty. serious question.
