Hey people,
the 4x4 indicator light on my dash has disapeared and sometimes the temp gauge doesnt register. Is this a conspiracy or are they shorting out somewhere along the line? I have checked all fuses and earths all seem ok. Thought i would ask before i pull dash apart.

Yeah, there would be a loose connection somewhere inside the instrument cluster... My temp gauge went through the roof one day which caused me to freak just a bit! When I checked the radiator was fine and drove off, the indicators decided to blink left right left right when turning in either direction ... then the temp gauge would dance up & down! Highly amusing for about 1 minute then it got very annoying. Turns out there was a connection loose, so my eleccy mate fixed it for me with some super glue Just pull the dash front out & see which wire is hanging by a thread or not connected any more

4X4 light first of all , unplug the socket near the transfer case and the plug that isnt the switch , jump the terminals with some wire , and check if the light comes on , if the light comes on its the switch , if it doesnt check that there isnt an obvious broken wire near the transfer case, the next easiest thing to check is the bulb in the instrument cluster , if all this is in working order its a broken wire between instrument cluster and transfer case.

The temp gauge seems like an oddity as it uses the manifold as an earth , a bad earth somewhere else will often make the temp gauge read higher , so this is what i would do , earth the temp gauge wire , the gauge will read hot . wiggle the wire while someone watches if it flickers down , if this doesnt help , check the wire at the cluster using an ohm meter from one end of the wire to the other in the engine bay , high resistance will verify if there is a bad connection, also check you actually have a thermostat installed , if your main driving is in the early hours of the morn and short distances it will make the temp appear low/not to register.

mine used to sometimes not register a temp, turned out the rivet that holds the terminal was loose and dirty, some carby clean and a tap to tighten it up fixed it
