Hi All

I have modified my Zook so it is running the transmission brake on the back of the transfer.

I need to replace the brake drum shoes in the transmission brake. Does any one know part numbers for these shoes or where they are readily available for purchase?

Thanks
HR

I put a set in Fourby's drover a few weeks ago... Didn't note the part number but I got them from Ripco.

They have their pros and cons..
Pro: they don't fill with mud and chew out shoes so easily.
Con: They won't hold the car on a slippery hill.. IE: With transfer brake applied, one rear wheel can turn backwards while the other turns forwards and car runs away.

In north America Samurai's were fitted with a diff lock to prevent this happening on icy roads.
The diff lock was ONLY an aid for the park brake and will break easily if you tried to use it as a regular locker.

It won't happen if you are welded/spooled or air locked as long as the air pressure holds.

by modified do you mean you fitted the transmission brake to a later model transfer case out of a wt which has the handbrake connected to the rear drums i asked a while ago if this could be done and didnt get a straight answer, i am struggling to find a early transfercase and just wondered if i could fit my transfer brake to a later model wide track transfer

NT transfer handbrake can be fitted to a WT transfer but you MIGHT have to tap the four holes to bolt it up.
You'll have to swap both the front flanges to NT also if you want to put it in a NT.

How thick is the brake? I was thinking about mounting one but didnt want to have to shorten my axil.
Want33s have you put one in a WT? I know it can be done but dont want to crush my uni's.
A nother crazy idea was to mount it to the front of the transfer case and having both of them run off the one handle giving the front wheels and rear wheels a park brake. Has this ever been done?
The reason I am wanting do do this is we all know how good the standard park brakes are. I get my zook in some fairly crazy spots and I want the ability and reassurance to know that the 2 park brakes together will hold no matter where I leave it.

Yep have swapped them around. Did it on Fourby's Drover a few weeks ago.
Crush uni's??? HUH?
Forget that front mount crazy shit. No room and way too hard.
Handbrake on WT's works well until you chew out the shoes in mud.
Disc handbrake conversion on transfer works well or best yet is disc conversion on rear axles.
You have reduction gears don't you? Put it in 1st low and it won't move.

Just re-read that... I haven't put the transfer mounted brake in a WT but I can't see why you couldn't.
Transfer mounts up same or just put handbrake assembly on existing transfer.
Flanges are different bolt size and pattern but are swappable.
Rear shaft MAY be a problem as you need a NT flange at the front and WT at the rear on an NT shaft..I think NT is a bit shorter than WT.

it maybe easier and more effective to put a line lock on the brakes dave.
you just push hard on the brakes and engage the line lock, if the brakes are working your sweet.

I've thought about this and I reckon its a goer...my grandad had a line lock parkbrake in his old chev impala... i just remembered the other day.

I made up my own disc transfer handbrake...works well..about half the price of the spidertrax kit. Little bit booty fab but not too bad...no doubt you'll see it in action in the next month or so.

Repco had no listing or so the parts guy said. I ended up ruffing up the brake surface and throwing them back in and adjusting them up. Seems ok for now

Hmmm that is a god idea...

Want33 - I know it will hold it self if left in 1st low. I ment if I need or want to leave it running.
Crushing unis - I know people that have had problem crushing unis from extending there drive shafts. I was asking if you had any issues with this on the installs you have done. I was after how thick the brake is meaning how much langth does it add to the driveshaft if any? Can the brake be redrilled to fit a W/T output? Or what are people doing just using a N/T rear shaft?
