hey all
up to the wiring stage of the conversion on my sisters sierra with a vitara 1.6l motor.
had a whole half cut with harness. basically removed the harness from the half cut and have proceded to cut out all the power windows, radio, power mirrors ect. but have got to a point where im really scratching my head.
there is just a mess of wires around all the plugs.
we have plugged most if not all the sensors up to the harness but just need to work out how to sort the rest out.
also have tried to use the original wiring for starter and alt wiring to make it a little easier.
have i gone about this the best way? or is there easier ways to do it?
im also really hoping i havent chopped out to many wires or anything i need.
also whats the best way to wire up ecu to ignition feed and and power itself?
and using the sierra harness to run basically everything it did before apart from the motor is this the easiest way?
cheers for any help provided and look forward to any reading.
cheers again ben

You said the same thing to me then ignored my PM

Benos let me know if you can't find someone on GC to help you. I've done 3 EFI looms now and its getting quite easy

actually does anybody have a good wiring diagram of the 1.6 loom or even just ecu pin numbers with wire descriptions. give me something to attempt to work it out myself. just nothing like the satisfaction of working it out yourself i reckon.
but yeah just a good wiring diagram or ecu pin numbers would be excellant.
just would love to have it running by friday afternoon lol. would be happy as larry if i can do it.

First, find a wiring diagram, and then just connect one wire at a time.
Youve plugged in all/most of the sensors so you dont have to worry about them, the ecu will do that..

There are only a few other wires you need to connect, (I did the g13b conversion to sierra) the main things I had to hook up were, fuel injection relay, main relay, electric fan relay, power to ecu (from battery), ignition to ecu (from under the dash), temp gauge to sierra loom, oil pressure to sierra loom- sierra loom does most things(starter motor etc), alternator- cant remember whether i used sieera loom or new loom, ill check tomorrow.
There will also be a fair few wires from sierra loom that arent needed anymore.

sierra wiring for starter yes. Hope ive answered your questions.

yeah you have cleared up a few things there.
im hoping to be able to use the relays and fuses that are in the efi harness. and believe it or not ive been trying to find a decent wiring diagram and am not having much luck, but will keep looking.
and so i need to use the sierra loom for temp and oil pressure. does the ecu need to know oil pressure at all?
i know there is 2 senders for coolant temp so id assume 1 is for ecu and 1 for gauges?
and we are using the sierra loom for alt and starter.
also whats the go with the speedo, i keep being told that i need to do something to get the speedo working but far as i know if the speedo worked with the sierra loom before why shouldnt it know?

You should be able to. There should be 2 relays you need, one is the main power relay, the other is the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump one has pink wires going to it. The main power one should have heavier gauge wires.

Not suprising. You will also find that there are quite a few different versions, so a diagram you find may not be 100% correct for you particular engine. A lot of things do carry over between versions though.

Yes, this is the way I do it. Tap into the dash loom where the instrument panel is and put in an 8-way connector (can get them at Supercheap for a few bucks), this is where you can interface the Sierra loom to the Vit loom.

BeNos wrote:

No, the oil pressure sender is for the oil pressure dash light, connect it to the dash via the 8-way connector

Correct

Yes

Speedo will work fine (it's a mechanical device driven by a cable connected to the transfer case). The electronic part you are thinking of is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor for VW Dave :thefinger: ), it gives a pulsed signal to the ECU to tell it how fast the vehicle is travelling. You can run without it but your check engine light will throw a code (24), and you will get better fuel economy with it.

Yeah definately use all the relays/fuses in the efi harness, I did that on mine, keeps it neat etc. Try and find a wiring diagram, you will definately need it- the ecu has inputs and outputs that you wont know what they are without it, also they connect things like the fan up in a funny way by switching the earth with a relay and things like that.
If you get a diagram youll be fine!

Ecu doesnt need to know oil pressure, its only for the light on the dash.

For the coolant temp, you can work out which one is for the gauge by checking the resistance of the old sierra one, and finding which one it is on the new engine. If neither one is correct find out which one you dont need and replace it with the one from the sierra motor. (there was one that was the same on old motor for me {g13a} as the new motor {g13b} so i didnt need to swap it)

This might be different to yours as mine was g13b but on the thermostat housing there was 2 temp gauge outputs (both single plugs), 1 fan switch (2 wires), and 1 temp output to ecu (2 wires).

I only used the temp gauge output that was the same and didnt use the other one, and connected up the fan switch and temp output (these should both be on efi loom)

I think the thing they mean with the speedo is the vss sensor which gives the ecu an input when the car is moving, I think it saves a bit of fuel when you are moving but not accelerating.

I havent connected this {yet?} but I think it just gives a bit better fuel economy. And your check engine light will stay on if its not getting this input.

You can get the part out of the vitara speedo and put it in the sierra speedo.

alright so most of the things i can work out i reckon but i still need to hunt down a decent diagram of wiring. will ring my auto elec mate and see if he can get anything.
and can anybody shed any more light on how to connect this vss. where to get it from and how to go about wiring it all up? god i hate wiring haha.
thanks again for imput been very helpful

Well I'm gonna fit mine now. I already get 7.2L/100 :D What should I expect with the VSS hooked up? 8)

I still can't believe I am returning these figures 8O And if the VSS makes that much difference then I may drop into the high 6's 8O 8O

Mine is a ute tho, and with the ally tray, its probably lighter than most SWBs' :D

Well id believe you fatzook. First fill on my g16 MPFI got a corrected 250k's to 24L around town 'testing' the power. Works out to be 9.6L/100.
