i found a hilux in a big pile of shitboxes and i want to use the towbar off it.

the problem is i need to either space out the chassis or cut down the towbar



my welding skills are very poor and i don't have any supervision from
someone who is good at welding so i would rather not weld it. i was thinking
that i could bolt some thick walled RHS to the chassis and then bolt the
towbar to the RHS.
i would have to space it out 85mm on each side with some thick walled 75mm RHS
and some flat bar. the tow bar needs to handle around 60kg towball
weight and a 800kg trailer, it wont be driven on a road so the legalities dont matter.
will it work?

although like you said without balls supervision this could all go balls up

Can you get hold of an oxy set and bend the bars in to meet the chassis?

just weld it shep, you said it wont be driven on the road so doesn't matter? What could possibly go wrong?

also,

1. is that steel strapping for the exhaust mount?, did the plastic strapping break?

2. where do you buy curved bolts for shackles? Please post a photo of you complete shackle

Mate you can get used tow bars for your rig for $50 there is one from ACT on here right now. I can ship thing very cheaply Let me know if this will make life easier for you. infact I have on here I will ship you that all you need it a tounge and the mounting bolts. It has a very slight bend in it but is fine to use.

swb bars don't fit LWB sierras if they did i would be laughing as i own a few of them.

and steve. get fucked. i smashed out the bit of the chassis that the shocks
bolt onto and it flapped around for a bit and took out the chassis mount for
the zorst which then poked a hole in my fuel tank so it is now held on with a
hose clamp
and the shackle, well that's another story however it isnt the shackle or bolt that is bent

i do have a shitload of threaded rod and that would be fairly quick.
i just went and had a quick look in my shed and there is 4 oxy and 4 acetylene bottles
so there must be a set of gauges and hoses somewhere so when i go to
work tomorrow that might be a good project for the day. gee i love being a
public servant.

and if i kill the tow bar there is heaps more toyotas at the dump.

i chose that bar because of the sticker, had to winch it over the pile off cars
behind it which was a bit of fun anyway

actually it is probably more like 1000kg
i only have 1 car and i want to be able to stick my boat in the water.

has two hilux tow bars it'd be tougher than a hilux.

The poor ute would probably carry the load better if you put the heavy stuff against the headboard or at least over the axle instead of behind it.

IMO I would be cutting it down and having it welded. Spacers will not relay the forces in the necessary manor.

I has a solution(serious)

Cut the box section either side of the tongue bracing, Cut out the box section till you get the plates inline with the chassis. Bolt together with plates.

Hopefully you can understand it, and you have long enough bolts and enough plate. Preferably 10mm thick x 50mm wide at least.

Bodgee, but it will hold anything!

Also, Maybe a plate behind(so you dont see it) to brace up the pulling and pushing movements.

Add some toyota spray rust and viola!

well i decided that BlueSuzy was onto something however there isn't a bolt
shop here and i am an impatient type of fella so i decided that i would just
weld it and worry about the consequences of failure later.

it is a bit low and not exactly square, and i didn't have any bolts for the passenger side. but i reckon it will do for now. i will find some bolts for the
passenger side but.





and on the plus side i reckon that i could fit a 6500lb winch in behind the
fuel tank. the towball is about 450mm off the ground so i hope i only get
around 150mm sag with the trailer on.

it only has bolts on the drivers side
if ya look at the second photo you will see the G clamp that is holding the
other side sort off on.

I think the G clamp is rated at atleast 2500kg so should be plenty strong?
