Im in the process of building a new motor with G16a Block and a G13b Head.
Question 1:
Ive gone to rebuild shop and they said that a g16a has a 91 tooth belt and a g13b has a 89 tooth belt. which one do you use?
Question 2: Do you need to use the cam pully off the g16a or the g13b.
Question 3: Which tensioner do I use
I assume the g16a has more teeth because it is 16 valve?

Hey mate,
I dont know for sure cause i cant see the motor myself but assuming both of the head sits at the same height then you would need the cam sprocket off the G16 and the G16 timing belt. So that way the gearing is the same to keep the engine timed correctly. Just make sure that after you fit the timing belt. Turn the crank over two times and ensure the marks for the head and the crank are still correct.

Nahh you know what fuck it.
You need the 1.6 t-belt, you need the 1.6 tentioner, you need to put the 1.6 cam gear on the 1.3 cam. The reason for the longer timing belt is the 1.6 block it taller being .3L bigger. You will also need the 1.6 timingbelt cover, 1.6 drive belt, 1.6 altinator with bracket (or you could upgrate to the falcon alt now) unless you swop the coolant pipe on the side of the block you will need longer coolant hoses, you will have to modify your airbox or the pipe going to the carby as it will be too short. Not to mention the addaptor kit if your going to use the standard sierra trans. You will need to modify your driver side motor mount or modify your existing mount.
That should get you started

Royce is right the 1.6 belt is a little long the tentioner is maxed out to get it tight. I have heard about this other belt but the standard 1.6 will work.

Thanks guys. The motor I got came out of a Wt LWB sierra. I paid $250 for the whole car. IT came with an adapter plate that looks like a BenT one. The reason the whole car was so cheap is because a guy I know brought it of Ebay for $3500. The photos on ebay looked smicko. when he got it here it looked like it was a beach buggy. full of rust like 80% rust 20% steel. the only thing worth salvage was motor and box. The guy was uncontactable after the sale of course. but the guy I got it off has ties to bikie gangs and has said he will do bad things if he ever gets hold of him and believe me hes trying.
Any way, thanks VW Dave that is all I needed to no to order a heap of parts and start machining.
And Royce, I will PM you with pics for that 16 valve single cam head. you can have it for $50 bucks to get me a carton plus whatever it cost to send it to you. It appears in pretty good nick.
If any one knows the number of the other belt or how many teeth that would be good

BOOOOOOO I have been after a 16v head..... I will send 2 cases...
Ohh and its a good idea to toss on a new water pump and get ahold of a clutch fan off a 1.6efi vitara.
I have had this set up for around 6 months and after all the teething problems I had getting it started the only problem I have had. It was running a touch hot and it would boil over when I turned it off. It ended up being a bad T stat.
Don't let anyone tell you to re-jet the carby just be sure the standard 1.3 carby is in good working order. Through a little trial and time I have found it runs best if you set the ignition timing between .5* advanced.
My head was a Virgin head and had never been off the factory block. I did some playdoe measurments and found that I could have taken off up to 85 thou without having any contact between the valves and pistons. I took off 55 thou to give it a little more power.
You are going to have to modify your exauhst to alow for the extra hieight of the 1.6. I at first just added 30mm to the factory setup but in the end I got a old set of 4/2/1 extractors and just added 20mm to the pipes between the 2 too 1. My rig also already had a 2" exauhst system with a small dirtbike baffle on the end. It sounds a little odd but works well.

1.3 head on a 1.6 block needs a T100 timing belt.
Use all 1.3 belt sprockets..
Take your pick of tensioners, they are the same.

I just bolted the g13b head to theg16 a block to make sure they line up and they do. My next question is, What do you do about the timing cover. do you platic weld the bottem of the 16a to the top of the 13b or what?
