hey all
doing the 1.6 efi conversion on the sisters sierra. anyway have managed to get a hold of a wiring diagram for the ecu pins and wires and the like for the 1.6 ecu and have followed that and reckon i got it pretty well spot on. have also run a couple of wires up to the cluster for engine light, vss and tacho.
have also run a wire from the ignition wire at the back of the ignition switch to a black and white wire going into the efi relay.
wire colours going to cluster are
brown for tacho. should already be earthed thru cluster from original?
do i need to remove original wire from cluster for this to work?
yellow to vss and other side of vss straight to earth? from what ive read on here and other suzi forums this should work alright?
violet to one side of check engine light and the other side to ignition positive wire?
thats the wires ive had to run mainly for gauges and what i thought to be power to relays to get ecu up and running.
but went to just check the fuel pump was running and started getting smoke from the pluged wire to original sierra wiring harness just below battery terminal.
now the only thing i can think of to be causing this is i have either got the wire running from the back if the ignition switch going to an earth instead of the switching wire of ecu relay. or well im out of ideas and need to go to an auto elec for some serious help haha.
does any of this make sense and can anybody shed some light on what i may have fucked up.
also neither efi relays are switching. and looking at the diagram its only the red and black wire from the one relay that powers both efi and fuel pump relay am i correct?
thanks for help and apologies for the long post.
just want to get it sorted?
cheers ben

http://www.suzukiinfo.com/vitara/

and car is in burleigh

Sounds like you have a multipoint engine from the wiring you describe,

I think you have some missing connections:

You should also have a permanent power (white) running to your ECU.

You should also have a "start" connection to you ecu (black yellow, + black red if auto)

Also make sure your "ign" wire comes from IG1 (blue black), not IG2 Yellow black), as IG2 switches off when you turn the key to start, and will turn off the ecu.

Also, the wiring diagram I'm looking at (assuming you do have MPFI) shows yellow being a "ign on" signal for an auto tranny version, so maybe disconnect your vss and check engine lights for now till you get it running.

Where does the smoking wire go?

Ben

yes i have the permenant power being the white straight to battery. and the yellow and violet running to the cluster were running to the cluster in the other car. verified by having cluster connected and tracing wires back to ecu then marking and modifying onto sierra cluster, so i think they are right.
and na the car it came out of was manual so there was no wires for auto in any of the looms. so should be able to rule that out as well.
this black and yellow wire? does it run to the starter motor by any chance? if so ive eliminated that wire thinking i could rely on the sierra harness for starting purposes.
so in what your saying i still think my problem lies with the ignition wire is coming from a black with white trace wire from back on ignition switch. possibly this is wrong. but i dont really remember seeing a blue black wire there? mayby im tripping and missing something.
smoking wire so to speak is the smaller wire running off the battery in the original sierra harness. it has a plug about 4" from the battery. assuming it runs to the fuse box in the sierra?

Yep, thats the one. You still need this connected to the ECU so that it knows you are trying to start the car, and it can do things like run the fuel pump.

I would definately double check where you wired the IGN wire into. You have something wired up incorrectly making a short circuit. The "smoking wire" you describe is the fusible link, and is designed to blow when you have a short circuit. Hopefully your ECU isn't fried. You will probably need a new fusible link now.

You should check the ignition feed with a multimeter to make sure you have the right one. I can't remember the Sierra wire colours right now, may not be blue black. Main thing is that it gets power when key is in ignition position, and in start position.

Be carefull though, and check everything. You don't need an electrical fire.

yeah i checked powers at the back of the ignition switch and the wire connected is definately getting power when turned to on havent tried it in the start but assume it would. but i guess look were assumtions have gotten me haha.
and alright il have to rehook that up to the car. do i need to just tap that yellow and black wire into the original harness to send a signal or does it need to be the thing actually actuating the starter?
and i highly doubt ecu is fried as it never got any sort of power to it.
only power was from the main feed wire.
meh il just have to go have another look tomoz arvo and see what i can nut out. probs something simple that ive ballzed up haha.

It just needs a tap. The key still actuates the starter, that signal just tells the ECU you are trying to start.

Everything else you describe sounds pretty well right. Probably just a simple fcuk up somewhere...

yeah thats what i thought. oh well il rehook up that and check my connection of wires to that relay for ignition power and hopefully thats were my problem lies.
il let ya know what i find anyway.
thanks heaps for ya help ben
ps do you sell your adapter kits to any businesses on the gold coast in australia? well a one stop suzi shop in nerang? just wondering as the kit we got looks identical to your setup but it came without the engine mount and was a fair few extra bucks. just curious thats all?

I do sometimes sell to shops, but not to them as far as I know, unless they buy privately from me thru ebay.
