While I had the shaft in the lathe I hadn't noticed that the OTHER end had some runout, well, not til tonight.

So I chucked it up like this and measured 1.2mm runout. Is that bad? Would that cause the disc on the other end of the shaft to wobble like I saw?

You need to put a machined section in the chuck. The unmachined part of the axle won't be concentric to the machined ends.

If the lathe is long enough put the flange in the chuck and the other end in a dead centre in the tailstock and check again.

Checked the shaft and it was all OK.

That was a couple of weeks ago, I figured that it was just the assembly that was the problem and that if I just put it all back together it would be fine. So today I did that and low and behold it was all OK

I did get the other side done too so i'll have to get some fluid and bleed them up. Oh, and put the handbrake cable in.

Progress! Yay!

This isn't strictly to do with the axle itself but it's pretty closely related so I thought i'd chuck it in here.

Rear shocks. I got a set of Commo SEDAN rears, which are quite a bit longer than wagon rears, for bugger all. I knew previously that the bush end is too small for the zook but only got to having another look at them today.

Since I didn't have any other shock and I really don't want to buy anything more to get this POS back on the road just at the moment I decided to make them work. Here are the commo shocks next to stock zook fronts, just to show the difference between the bush sizes.

I lopped the ends off the stock zook fronts...

And welded the bastards to the commo shocks! :D
Image

At first I was a bit touch and go whether I should since the shocks are under pressuer, but once I started welding I totally forgot about that fact and luckily remembered before I put a weld around the whole way. I did it in steps a bit at a time so as not to heat up the shock too much. I also wussed out a bit and didn't have the welder cranked as much as I usually would. I think I should have had it up a bit more. In any case I doubt they are going to break.

The only thing I am concerned about now is the shock angle. I hope it's not layed over too much. Time will tell!

They're actually pretty long, about 11" travel from memory. I doubt my springs will get anywhere close to that

Nah I was trying to show off the lathe behind the wheels. Oh, and the milk crate :P

How did this whole project pan out? all ok?
Happy with the rear disk brake setup?

Anything you would do different if you had a do over?

Am keen to begin the rear disk brake conversion for my coily.

I've been driving on it for a couple of months now.

No major issues except that the caliper mounts place the caliper out too far from the tube. This causes the brake pads to sit over the edge of the rotor and I think this is causing the fucking annoying pad squeak that I have.

The only other complaint I have is the dimshits that made my handbrake cable made it too long so the adjustment needs to be done right up to get it to work, which shits me because there is now no adjustment for when it stretches over time.

EDIT: I should have added in, when looking at doing this consider how you're going to do the handbrake. Having the brakes on the caliper is handy but you really need consider where your cables are going to go and if you need to get something made up. I went to considerable trouble and expense to get a hybrid cable made that uses part zook and part skyline. It works well, but there are probably cheaper and easier ways of doing it.

Right. interesting.

Ok, so I will have to have a think about the handbrake cable bit.

Did you buy the skyline cable when you purchased the calipers, then try and marry it with the existing sierra cable? or you got an all new custom job from a cable making joint?

I don't suppose much can be done about the caliper positioning without redesigning the caliper mounts. I assume the pads are only positioned a few millimeteres over the outside edge of the rotor?

My coily has some sort of factory proportioning valve. Did you end up doing anything in the way of a proportioning valve - or just plumb straight throught to the master cylinder?

I have PM'ed Joe - hopefully he has a spare caliper mounting kit kicking around.
