I'm converting to LPG and from what I understand it's a higher octane fuel than petrol, so therefore I may need to advance the timing for best engine performance.

Anybody know what I should be aiming for?



Also- I've only owned my beast for 2 months so i'm not in the know... how hard is it to change and adjust the timing / timing belt? Looks pretty accessable but i've got A/C gear seemingly attached to the radiator, and i'm hoping I don't have to pull it out... I wouldn't dare tackle the timing in more recently owned late-model cars (due to access and technology complexity issues), but i'm much more at home with the Sierra - easier to fix than an old Holden.

I can't find any DIY links in a quick search, maybe an article out there I'm not finding?

Ignition timing is as easy as spinning a 12mm spanner.
Usually gas ignition timing is advanced a few degrees more than petrol.
G13 is 10BTDC for petrol so try 12-14 on gas and see if it pings... If it doesn't, then advance it a bit more.


Cam timing needs radiator and timing cover removed to get to but is simple enough.

should be able to advance it 6 - 8 degrees over standard. As already mentioned, you can advance it till it pings and then back it off a couple of degrees

what size gas tank you going to be running and where are you going to put it ??

if your going straight gas you should get the dizzt recurved. gas and petrol use different amounts fot different loads just advancing the timing would get it running right. you also need a colder rang plug.

100L tank w/ 80% useable capacity. 840mm long, 390 diameter.

I have a hardtop, tank in the cargo area, as far forward as possible without being a hindrance to seating. Tank breather is vented outside. Still room to cart around my guitars and amps, so i'm happy enough with the post-install space restrictions.



You can rip out the petrol tank and put in a gas cyl on the underside, but you'll have to make do with a smaller option to fit the clearances. BTW, if you do want an underside tank - put a cylinder in, not a 'spare wheel' shaped tank - makes better use of the available space.


I get the car back through the week with the LPG install finished and certified - will post pics then.
