hey guys, as you probably already have guessed, by my many stupid questions, im trying to suss out how i can build up a tough and capible jimny. 235's are something im interested in, but im thinking stock 1.3 and stock gearing is gunna make it a little bit terrible.... is there any diff center from another suzi that i can slot into the existing jimny diffs that will make the 235s more driveable? and noob question no2, will this effect the compatibility of airlockers at all later down the track as they are on my to do list... thanks again all :)

i dont think you can change the diff ratios in the stano jimny diffs.

prob better off putting a seira transfer in it then u can get a shit load of gear ratios for it.

also i got 30"s on mine and its no to bad, i mean i gotta drop back a gear or 2 going up hills but on the flat its still pretty good. i think it just needs more POWER!!!! Armsup

Stock Jimny is 4.09 diff ratios.

A change of transfer to a 1.3 sierra one would be good. But, it can make more problems with your vss (as its in the jim transfer). And possible driveshaft changes, and mount changes.

lever operation, which im hoping is the better option :D haha... i think the tranny gears for jimnys are kinda pricey in comparison to the sierra ones. was hoping to find out a different diff ratio that could be sourced easy and hopefully cheaper from wreckers or what no..

Swapping just the ring and pinion shouldn't have any affect if the tyre size compensates for the change in ratios. With this in mind the transfer case will operate in exactly the same way. 235s are only about 28.75 inch diameter and will put the ratios and speedo out by 10-12%. A true 30 inch tyre would be closer to 18-20%... At a guess.

The transfer case gears in my Jimny reduce the drive in high and low by 24% which is great but a 10% drop would have been much better.

I'm fairly sure that 1.3 ring and pinions will suit the Jimny rear diff. The front ring and pinion is reverse cut. I'm just repeating info I've been given on Auszookers in the past and I'm sure there's someone else who'll know the facts about which ring and pinions that will interchange with a Jimny.

Yes, but in the end. It decides on how big your going to build this Jim.

I would go sierra transfer as i wouldnt be happy with 30's... Yes a big mod. But people have done this before.

I have seen 30's on a jim, stock transfer on rd. (I have never seen one work offroad!)

Sierra ring and pinions. whole 3rd member will fit the rear only. But they will only make the gearing higher. 3.7/3.9. The next option, but not worth the hassle is from a maruti sierra, 4.11.

Then aftermarket ratios. Unsure ratio's.

Then, You can also get a vit 5.12 "front only" r & p to put in the rear of the jim. But then comes the 1L front diff centre size.. I am very unsure if there is a 5.12 in this size, and if there is, it would be rare.

So,
Front of Jimnys diffs are 1L sierra size.
Rear jimny's diff is 1.3 sierra size.

(i have studied the jimny that i am wrecking)

rear diff gear is interchangable but i think the front is unique to jimny. Stick with the stock 4.09 ratios, i had these with 31's and a sierra transfer case.

OK I don't know much about Jimnys so excuse my ignorance.

If the rear is 1.3 size, and the front is 1.0L size, what about 4.8's? for the rear use a 4.8 from a Vitara (Don't ask me what model lol), and for the front a 4.8 from an LJ50. Can you use a low pinion diff in the front? or at least make the low pinion C&P work?
Would be quite low gearing, would probably suit around a 31" tyre, so quite tolerable with a 30" tyre...?

this could work, what u want is a j20a manual front diff or a v6 auto diff, both of these are 4.875

LJ50 is 39/8 = 4.875 as well, so they are an exact match 8) ratio wise.

So if a Jimny front diff is 1L size.....could a Jimny front air locker be adapted to 1L and LJ diff centres???? :? :P :P :D

Suzuki Super Carry (aka Holden Scurry) have 5.125 diffs in 1.0lt size, but the side gears have 26 splines and only a 2 pinion open carrier. 1.3 Sierra 22 splines side gears fit the case, or 1.0 Sierra or LJ 4 pinion carriers will fit the Ring and Pinion.

Had 2x Super Carry diffs in an F10A powered LJ80 running 30in BFGs, just right!

Jimny front is high pinion Definate.

So, carry rear etc are low pinion, arm changes will be needed to get the steering out of the way of the low pinion centre.

hi pinion/low pinion gears only are incompatable.

Yes, so any vit front diffs ratios, sierra 1.3 f&r /coilyrear ratios. Coily front is hipinion but bigger 1.3 size!

If your just going to be running 30's max. I wouldnt bother changing the ratios. It is going to cause a major headache.

See how she drives. She will be slower on road. But like any other standard 4wd with bigger tyres.

OK still just sort of guessing here. But didn't that wide-as bloke on outerlimits have a 5.12 Vit diff in the front of his Coily? That means he has put a low pinion C&P in a high pinion front axle. Just sort of indicates to me that it can be done.

303zuke, you realise you just made scurry/carry van rear diffs very very hot property!!!

It doesnt matter if 'wideaz' ' had a hp5.12 in a coily.

We are talking for a Jimny here. Different sizing.

So any vit front diffs ratios, sierra 1.3 f&r ,coily rear only ratios = Jimny Sizing For Rear of Jimny only.

Find a smaller Hipinion 1L size for the front diff. Thats where you will find drama's...And then you have to find a better ratio in High Pinion..

The Rare 4wd carry and carry ute maybe an option. They will be tiny! I don't know anything much about them. They maybe high or low pinion. I have seen a special internet forum for them somewhere..

i think the point we are trying to get to is, can you run a high pinion diffcentre, upside down with a normal crown wheel and pinion and it will work as a normal diff.

Possibly to get you out of drama's only.. But i wouldnt do it. The gears are designed to run 1 way. Not the other. That is changing gears only. Not the whole centre, flip the centre and you will run into more dramas. Front Diff hat shape etc..

So..Don't do it.

Maruti ratio is 4.09, same as the jimny, the 4.11/4.1 confusion came about from people rounding up trying to "simplify", but instead adding confusion.
Maruti r/p is reputed to be stronger. Although I turned one to dust. The jimny centre I replaced it with has handled the same abuse without problems.

umm that won't work......that will run backwards. as well as not fitting standard ring and pinion.

you have three options.

run a sierra t/case....but i'm not to keen on thier noise etc...

get some jap gears for your t/case. they aint cheap but are beautifully made :P

or get a custom front diff made to suit. this will fit all sierra/ vit gears as well as getting rid of the front housing flex that is designed into it to give proper king pin inclination. also you can get to run sierra hubs with better wheel bearing setup for larger tyres.

Might not be a bolt on solution, but if what has been said is true, I still see it as quite do-able... But meh...
