Me and dad had troubles trying to get my gearbox out. Just wondering if anyone can point out something we're missing. Taking it to a hoist on monday though to have another go.

Remove both front and rear shafts
Unplugged all electronics
Removed starter motor
Removed all bolts around bellhousing and engine
Removed crossmember.

We're doing it primitively with a jack and it sitting up on stands. We just couldn't get the gearbox to go back any further then like 10mm.
Dad reakons there might be some brackets preventing the box from going backward.

Glad i'm doing this anyway, found some of my rubber mounts for the exhaust have come off and that I have a small crack in the crossmember that needs to be welded.

Stekky & I removed the motor from a 94 Vit a few days ago and it had an extra bracket between the the block and gearbox near the clutch cable bracket. Maybe that is your problem...
Silly question but have you removed the gearstick?
When we removed engine the sandwich plate was holding the engine back. Check yours is free.

there are brackets either side, its easier to remove the whole thing that jsut undo the bolts on the box side

theres the little plate bottom of the bellhousing too

otherwise jsut give it all a good shove and it should fall on you easy enough

I removed the surrounds but havent taken the sticks out. i don't think we've got it far enough back to have that issues yet.
2 bolts near the clutch cable yeah? Had those undo. Dad was doing the other side and he reakons theres a bracket there but he couldnt get the bolt undone because he couldnt get leverage on it. Would this bracket thing be holding the box forward?

Remove the whole thing as in engine and all? I'll have another look on monday when its on the hoist.
Dad started stressing and I swear if he kept going he would've tore the engine outta the car the way he was "shoving" it.

no just the brackets between engine and block, the way one of em bolts to teh side of the bellhousing will jsut make it harder to put back together anyway

Sounds like you had the box loose if it moved back 10mm. It may just need encouragement from a bigger lever. Just double check everything before you go leaning too hard on levers

Pop a jack under the front of the motor to pivit it back - I found that worked for me - just watch out the dizzy doesn't go through the firewall - put a block of wood between it and the firewall

I'm gunna have another decent go at it on Monday when it's on the lift and we can get under it properly.

I'm pretty sure the dizzy is actually ON the firewall. Could be interesting trying to put wood behind it haha :p

they arent hard to do, you just have to be confident with teh amount of force you are using, like scrawn said once its moving its loose so just keep going

ive had mine out a few times both on the ground and a hoist and there is nothing real tricky about em, just undo and remove everything that looks like its in the way, dont bother with trying to leave stuff in to save time

I am not sure if these boxes are the same as the GV but I found with mine that the transfer end is heavier than the box end. While i was trying to push the box up then push it back it wouldn't move. Then I pulled down on the front of the box and it slid straight out. This depends on where you have the jack though. Just an easy thing to try.

It was that little plate holding it in place and the bracket on the passenger side was just making it awkward.
I tell ya though, once it was up on the lift it was 100x easier to work on.

Now I gotta figure out how to tighten up the clutch a little.

like adjsut where the clutch takes up?
thats done on the cable on the outside of the bellhousing, loosen to make it bite lower on the pedal, tighten for higher (but make sure there is a few mm slack in it)
