Hi Guys, i recently purchased a 84 Sierra with a 900cc 4cyl. A few days after buying it, i was taking the tranfer lever fromk 4L to 4H when i discover that the lever was stuck. There were no gears, no movement in lever, and it was not in neutral as the front diffs were still engaged.
So i got down and greasy and took the tranfer case out, took it to a mechanic, and found out that the selector had been bent and so on.
After hours of frustratingly tight work, the new box was back in, but as soon as the same action was taken, the transfer case was stuck between 4L and neutral (well thats what it looked like on the gear stick).
I was talking to my dad about it and he had a mate who used to build the transfer cases and he siad that the round selector that slides between the 4L and N and 4H gears was able to move too far, off the end of the spline or cogs and onto the shaft that had no cogs. So when i tried to force the lever back it would bend the selector arm.
Apparently a quick fix is to weld a ball on the end of the selector rod that controls these gears so as to stop it from being able to be pushed too far. no im sure precise measurments would need to be taken and i dont know what they are, but for the more knowledgable, it would make a lot more sence.
Anyway just thought id let you all know incase someone out there is wondering why transfer cases keep blowing on them:)

Common issue but usually is the shifter sheet that is meant to sit under the transfer stick. make sure u have on in there. only $15 or so from the dealer.

pm bruce on the forum he makes and sells them pretty cheap and i beleive he may even post them out.
it is a [retty common problen that is easily fixed in 10 minutes pull the shifter out figure out where it should be in the gearslides and slip it back in, generally shouldnt have to take the whole transfer out but yours may have been different.
i got my gearbox stuck like that in 5th one arvo and had to drive home in 5th from the airport to redcliffe, but 10 minutes at home and she was good as new

Thanks pope and bruce. do the kits come with install instructions? if so, do you want me to buy them of u bruce or would you prefer i go to Ebay (only cause ud get more money the other way:)

No it's about the same price but I can sell one part only. Makes no diff to me mate really just glad we can help you. The ebay guys are real good and I trust them 100%.

no worries Bruce. glad to be of help mate
i was stuck up in Lancelin when mine failed on me.. luckily i aligned the shifter guides and the shifter fell into place and got me into 2wd for the rest of the weekend
this is one of those fixes people should do when they first get a zook! i am going to replace the one on my mates zook soon also. before it goes on him also.
