Just had to pop smoke and bail out, and walk home after the car wouldn't start, or even turn over. Luckily was only 2km from home, and its now sitting in the shops carpark.

Anyway, started up ok when i left home, did the shopping got back into the car and it won't turn over, not even the solenoid clicking.

When it turn the key, the warning lights that are normally on dim slightly, and the radio turns off until i stop trying to turn it over. Which tells me there is some sort of ignition short or dodgy connection.

quick look at the batt terms and leads to starter look ok, the alt charge cable is ok, tried tapping the starter to see if i could get some clicky and nothing. all fuses ok.

for when i go back tonight, any one got any other usual suspect spots to check?

the small speaker wire under the starter - get under the car and look took me 3hrs and I still didn't see it (it was dark though). I got a new starter and the cable connector thing always pops off mine...

This might help please excuse my ignorance but I was a little desperate at the time (had a one way flight to Brissie the next day and had to pack up my house and be out by 7am AND go to work at 9am)

Just rescued the car! the little wire was on, and clean and still failed it go.

so push started it and away it went. got home turned it off then tried to start and it did the clicky clicky for a few starts, and now seems to be normal again..

so i guess it was just stuck or something... or its on its way out..

This is exactly what happened to my lad's Sierra and it got to the stage where it won't start and he had to clutch it. So............... I believe it is the same issue. As soon as he put new starter in good as gold!!!!!! problem solved

Looks like i'm in the market for a starter motor... has done the same thing this morning...

Pull it out, pull it apart, see if its dirty/mud etc.

If it is, clean it out and re-lube. Wack it back in, and see if that has worked.

If the solinoid is stuffed. Grab another, some lancers have the same starter motor as sierra's. Your starter is Mitsubishi brand. Swifts are different branding.denso or something so dont bother looking at 'em.
If the ratcheting gear thingo is stuffed, again, get another.

When i did my conversion, used sierra starter, it wound over the motor fine, then 5mins later, tried it again...nothing..wtf! gear was snapped! So i got another out of a lancer. Been fine ever since.

There is a thread or few threads on here somewhere about starter motors and what fit.

Never pulled one out of a sierra, are they are a pain to do? as in getting them in and out.

might have a read in the service manual see if I can do it myself over easter.

1 bolt into the gearbox, And 1 bolt through the gearbox with a nut on the other side and wire for earth lead.

Can be a pain if havent been touched in a while.

Undo 1 nut on end on solinoid for power lead?, and undo little ignition wire.

Pretty straight forward.

A quick check can also confirm if it is the starter, remove the small lead from the starter get a screw driver and short out the terminal on the starter and the main battery cable on the starter. If the starter still fails to turn, then you will need to replace it. The main problem is also the brush dustcan short out the motor and giving a good clean may fix it.
