just snapped two of four............

gasket was leaking hard on way up north so i nipped em up a bit.

got new gasket but broke two bolts on front of cover.

got spares....

can I just drill brokens out carefully or will need

special tool?

Did the bolts break from overtightening or were they siezed? If they're not siezed then they should come out easily

where did it snap? with the cover off is there enough of the bolt to get vise grips on to undo it? or try using a centre punch and hit the end of the bolt in the direction to undo it.

you will probably find that now the head of the bolt is off the bolt is no longer tight. (unless it was pulling up tight on the shank or bottoming in the hole (unlikely for that bolt)).

it that doesn't work use an easyout to remove it.
If you try drilling out the bolt to retap the thread you will very likely fail. the bolt is steel (possibly high tensile) and metal around the bolt is alloy (much softer then steel), if the drill is slightly off centre or it wanders then as soon as it touches the alloy it will want to drill the alloy and run off and be fucked.

if they snapped due to over tightening just get a screw driver and tap a grove into them and spin them out, or grab a easy-out, about $13 at repco, you will need to drill holes in them anyway with an easy-out. The easy-out will be the bast bet for a seized bolt

Thanks heaps guys....they snapped due to overtightening.....

wasn't until I went to take them out that I broke em.

they snapped off at the bottom so some left in screw holes in the head.


I'll go the screwy then the easyout first thing in the morn.

I'm pretty sure they are high tensile bolts if so easyouts wont work....
A few years ago i snapped a bolt for the thermostat housing we ended up having to drill around the snapped bolt in the manifold to get the left over bolt out then filled the hole with steel putty then after it set we tapped a new thread into that then screwed a stud into the manifold then used a nut on top......

you can drill high tensile easy enough. with standard HSS drill bits. and if you can drill it you can put an easy out in it.

For the record I may or may not have done this exact same thing and an easy out did nothing. I ended up calling Capital Thread Repair (ACT) and he drilled them out, resleaved the holes and then retapped to the correct thread. Cost me $50.

Also, check the two bolts that haven't snapped. I dare say you've stretched them and will need 4 new bolts.

drilling HT bolts is easy enuf .. just don't heat them up.. once you do that your screwed - use some sort of coolant.
if you can grind off the uneaven snapped bit /make it flat and make a decent indent in the center of the screw you will inprove your chances 10000000000000 fold

The rocker cover bolts won't be hi tensile otherwise they wouldn't of snapped. They are just to keep a rubber seal, sealed. Not to bolt the whole head together...

Try centre punch/screwdriver/vicegrips. Don't damage the outer diameter/thread/hole of the broken stud. That will make it worse.

Best bet is LeftHand drill bit. (yes they exist though harder to find, possibly more exxy)And then easy out.

Next will be normal drill bit an then easy out.
Problem is, with normal drills, they will drill the broken stud further into the hole, making it possibly harder to remove if deep. Make sure your drilling the stud in the centre. Offset may cause you more drama's. Also, make sure you drill the hole correct for the easy out, too big and the easyout may not grab the stud but bottom out in the head!



Easyouts/drills are harder then High tensile. Cheap shit brands maybe soft.

I used to get this quite a lot.

Once you start telling people it cost 2 or 3 times as much to get it out once they butcher it themselves, they learn to just bring it in unmolested.

Another way I've had to use a few times is weld another bolt to the broken bit. Because it's in alloy you'll only get weld on the bolt.

Yes, also a good trick, and the heat helps sometimes also if Loctited/seized.

Those cam cover bolts are very small though. Id be scared, weld can stick to alloy! or blow it away

I think its copper or brass or something that it won't stick to. Even if you straight weld onto it.

Strap on have left handed bits individually I have no idea of price, have used them on race car manifolds often, usually after someone has been a little too heav handed.

Ended up being a 5 dollar repair.............payed for bolts,borrowed easy outs.
