altenator has died (i think its the regulator it read 15.5v some times and less than 13 others)

i have a new alternator to go in it but i was wondering if its possible to piggy back an external regulator on the shot one.

If so how? ( i would like to keep a spare regulator on hand in case it happens hundreds of k's from anywhere)

No mate.. No way to piggy back an external off an internal..


You could keep a spare internal one and pull it apart and replace it.. Not that hard of a job to do

you can piggie one on. make sure ya brush box above ground. (youll have to do this) then solder some 3mm wire off both brushs and you can use either a re55 bosch reg or wat ever to regulate your rotor voltage. we do this to large bosch alt's. but it can be done on any alt.

I have seen pigging backing of regulators, but it is definately not recommended, there is too many possibilities of failure. as fatzook wrote, carry a spare internal regulator. They don't take long to change and are normally very reliable.

Another question..

Anyone know what the minimum RPM is for a self exciting Regulator to kick in?

Apparently there is an 'upgrade'that suits the sierra style plug that makes the regulator self exciting and being a bit old school i like to retain the ability to push start my ride (but being able to push start with 0 volts would be cool )
