Can it be done with basic tools, or is it a shop job?

Is there much to replace aside from a couple of seals?

Not sure if it is worn, but it has a slight leak.

i wouldn't of thought them to hard, where would you buy a rebuild kit from?

if you can find parts it shouldnt be hard, but the suzuki workshop manual says parts are not availiable and for cost effectiveness you should just replace the whole thing (and doesnt have instructions).

It wouldnt surprise me if it was just a set of o-rings. I would pull it appart marking and noting the positions of everything (how many turns etc to save adjustment later) and see, but thats me, but I'm sure many many ppl on here have old boxes they arent using as they have put in power steering but kept the old steering box.

wouldnt the worm drive wear.. i just replaced mine with another secondhand.. when it stuffs up.. another 50 bucks and your off..

Yep, excessive wear is the problem- there's so few parts in a steering box that when the important ones wear out it's going to be a throw it away item.

It might be possible to replace the seals, but my guess is that once the seals are gone it's pretty clear the box is on it's way out as it's starting to get excessive play in it.
