This is embarrassing...but...I cant find the idle screw on my 97 sierra's carby.

Anyone got a picture of their carby showing the screw? or can describe its location.

This coily I just bought idles at 1500 to 1700 rpm!!!

I just had a quick look at mine. Bear with me with this explanation...If you look at the engine from front on, there is a plug(looks electrical, on the carby) near the rocker cover, it is under the plug. Good luck, and sorry for that vague explanation, I have never been good at explaining things.

thats the idle mixture

idle speed is round the back and from memory you need to look from the rocker cover side

From personal experience. If you need to touch the idle screw, it's time for a carby rebuild. You can rip the tamper proof cap off to adjust the idle, but this was only a temporary fix for me.

Hey mate welcome to AZ,
Were in North Sydney? I am in Baulkham hills If you want to swing by I can take a quick look at it for you. A simple high idle is most probably a cover up for a out of time engine. Do you have a timing light? I would be hooking that up and having a look before you touch anything. You could also have a idle problem thats being covered up.

Either way let me know if you need any help.

Oh and Royce is right its on the rocker cover side of the carby. Its easy to stand on the passanger side of the car sierra and reach over to it. Its down low on the carby close to the back of it.

Thanks for the offer to help v.w.dave, I am in Avalon, so not all that handy to Baulko, but not too far if things get beyond my abilities. I am going to have a play with it today, then have to have some plates and screws taken out of my arm tomorrow, so probably will not get to the bottom if it for the next few weeks while I feel sorry for myself.

So the idle screw has a tamper proof cap on it ay...now i know why I could not find it, I was looking for something obvious.

So I guess the big obvious screw that sticks out on the passenger side is the mixture screw?

Off to play mechanic. Will report back. Hope it not carby rebuid time...that will be out of my league.

Couldnt find a timing light, so i just adjusted the idle screw.

For those who do not know, the isle screw is the big screw on the passenger side of the carby towards the back. It sticks out a few cm and on mine, did not have a tamper proof cover.
However, it will not do anything if the bottom-out screw (non tech term) on the part that rotates when the accelerator it pushed is not adjusted properly. Mine was screwed too far in, so the accelerator was always on, and never allowed the idle scre to take effect. Once i backed that off (3 or 4 turns), the idle scre became effective.

that other screw is the fast idle for the choke, if your choke isnt turning off you have other dramas
