Great forum. Loving all the info. Thanks.
Just bought a 97 coily the other day and starting to fix a few little problems. Mainly very high idle and a super stiff accelerator pedal. Idle should be easy enough, but though I would ask about the accelerator to see if anyone knows what is wrong.

First 10mm or so of movement is ok, untill the slack in the cable is taken up, then you have to be He-Man to push it to the floor, which it needs for the car to get anywhere!

does anyone have advice before i start ripping springs off the accelerator pedal and carby?

get a new cable before it breaks
you should be able to check linkages at the carb easy by hand
mine got stiff 1 week later the cable snapped 250k from home.

un hook the cable from the carby and assertain wether its the carby or pedal and if u find its still stiff at the pedal end and pull the cable out and see if thats stiff if its the carby it may have a carbon build up around the butterflys or the cable could be coroded may need a new one or spray some lube down it and see if it frees up or if its the pedal the lube it and if its still stifff maybe pull it apart and grease it hope that helps

i suffer the same problem, ive put it down to the way the accel. pedal pivoits because both my cable and carb are fine. ive got near 300 k
on mine and it seems well worn

Thats all we did with motorbike clutch/brake cables. Keeps the cables nice and lubed.

my cable was not moving the 90 degree bend properly i uesd graffite

Thanks guys, I will lube that cable and see how it goes then look inbto the rest of the suggestions.

yup - mine went stiff once and wd40 did the trick... - i also had to lube up the spring at the pedal as it was corroded, but it was catching in the firewall due to dust buildup over time... im pretty sure it was just the pressure of the spray that fixed that, not so much the lube.

Be aware though that once you put something like wd40 on its going to attract more dust. There are other options like graphite powder etc (used on bike brake cables etc) - its a dry lube, most bike shops carry it.

As already said unhook it at the carby and dump fill it full of wd40. I think I have a few cables layinjg around in the back yard if you need one. If it comes to that.

as everyone above has said, a liberal application of our frined WD-40 fixed the problem.

The question remains...what can't WD-40 fix?

If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40.

If it moves and it shoudn't, use Duct Tape.

The only 2 things you need in your toolbox!

Rather than starting a new thread I thought I'd add to this one.

In addition to my post above, I just want to say that if your accelerator cable is starting to stick you should change it as soon as possible. The above is only a temporary fix!!!

I changed my accelerator cable today and this is what I found when I pulled apart the old 'sticky cable'.
