So i finally have some money saved up for zook. I'm ordering two lockrite lockers soon and i just wanted to know what else i should buy with them.

I was thinking a pair of chromoly axles and a knuckle rebuild kit and new wheel bearings for the rear. I also need a pair of 26 spline side gears, but lowrange offroad don't list them so wheres the best place to get them.

Thanks
Sam

The Lockright's come in 2 types, Std or Delux. The Std version (p/n 1510) fits F or R and uses your current sidegears, which means if you want to fit Chro-Mo front axles you will have to find some 26 spl gears as you say. But the Delux version (p/n 1530) is for the rear and comes with it's own 26 spl couplers that replace the side gears. They are reputed to work better than the Std version lockright.

If you have the money to spare, you may as well get axles/bearings/rebuild in the same parts order as its normally cheaper.

Ask Sean on lowrange if he sells the side gears.

http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... -kits.html

and all i will need for the rear is the locker and new wheel bearings?

You sure you want them? I had a rear lockright, and in the end I only drove my car when I had to, it removed all the enjoyment out of it...

I would go a spool in the rear rather that a lockright, JMO though...

My zook is my second/build-up car so i usually only drive it on the weekend, i have read about the cons of using them on the road (tight corners, locking in and out etc.) but thought it was a better choice than the spool because it is locked 100% of the time which causes more wear and tear?

Although, i have never driven in a car with a lockrite or a mini spool so i am unsure which way to head, i might have to do some more reading before i fork out my money

31zook - i would get the 1530 lockrite which replaces the side gears if it is a better unit, thanks for the offer though

Cheers Sam

also if it's a weekend wheeler then just weld it. the wear and tear will be less noticable then the clunking of a setup lockright...

Yeah that idea did come across my mind but if i weld it i can't un-weld when i want to take it out like a mini-spool...

After doing a bit of reading i was thinking of a mini-spool in the rear, with a lokka in the front with cromo axles. This way i can pull the mini spool out if i have need to and i don't have the problems peolpe have with the lokkas.

i don't drive it that much on the black top so i should still get a fair amount of life out of my rear tires

Cheers
Sam

My sierra was horrible with the lockwrong, I would go a spool. At least that way it is reversible if you don't like it.

Thanks for your help boys

Sure you don't want to just save up for an airlocker? They are the only legal option, and worth their weight in tities...
I know they are pricey, but talk to Joe, he may know someone who can get them cheap

you can weld a rear diff if you have another set of spider gears so you can take it out like a spool.

Im running the 1510 Lockright in the rear (using sidegears), and the 1530 Lockright in the front (using couplers), plus crmo shafts and cv's. Been driving with the rear locker for years and never had a problem, functioned perfectly, and since driving last weekend with the front one as well, still functioned great and went more places without having to hit things hard. Its made the steering a lot heavier though with the front locker.
I wouldnt weld the diff personally, a properly installed Lockright works awesome. I can give you a hand installing if needed.

Why do you say detroits, lockrites, ox, etc etc etc are not legal?

Anything that can suddenly lock up when you don't expect should be illegal, even if it isn't...

i love my airlocker... i've got rear only and drove a welded rear before that... both are 100% utterly predictable and reliable... i could not bring myself to something mechanical deciding when to and when not to engage basically of its own accord.

its too late now seeing as you already ordered... but personally i'd take 1 rear airlocker over a front and back auto-locker.

still, its all personal opinion and youll get used to whatever you have... and generally you'd have to say any kind of locker is going to assist more than none at all (given you know how to drive it).

Lockrights remain locked, until wheel speeds change too much, then they release with a pop or bang. Locked differentials are illegal for on road use, therefore lockrights are illegal.

Mine used to unlock so violently that the whole car would move like I had gone over a small speed bump...

Aron is right, you should decide when it should lock, not it.

Rain + Sierra handling + mud tyres + roundabout + lockright unlocking then locking again = bad news...

This runs a front airlocker and with most of the wieght over the front end it wouldnt disengage so he could easily turn the corner. Even with hydro steer it still made him mount the opposite bank to turn, admittedly it eventually released after 3-4 shuffles back and forth. I'm not sure whether a light wieght zook would be any different. Has anyone tried the electronic lockers or cable lockers for full on/off functionality?

From my personal experience i have never had a problem with my auto lockers (I believe front + rear they are the "Lockrite" brand)

My car was a daily driver for 5 years and yes it would step out around roundabouts with your foot flat after breaking traction in the wet. I was aware of that problem and drove according and thus never had a problem.

Furthermore my lockers never unlock with a pop or bang on road and affect the weight distribution when they unlock. If they are doing this I would suggest that the lockers are not working correctly. As for those who say that you cannot adjust the lockers I have ran two diffs over the time period and they have both worked correctly and I have never had to adjust them.

/rant over

Yes air lockers are better but whether they are worth the extra price is a personal decision and imho they are not.

Ahhh but as you say they are not constantly locked. They permit a differential action which is what is required.

Thanks for the tech boys

I Have decided to run a mini spool in the rear (predictable, 100% locked, only a weekend car with minimum on road driving, not hard to set up properly etc...)

In the front i will run a 1530 lokka that im hopefully going to get of a forumite when i get some time, with chromo's.

I can't justify the price of an ARB locker in a car i only get to do very little km's in... BUT ARB lockers are the tits and are a awesome bit of gear!

From all the info i have read on auto lockers you have to change your driving style but they also have to be installed correctly to get the maximum benefit from what i have read (No Personal Experience).

Again thanks for the info and help but i think this set-up would be the best for me.. (I hope  lol)

P.S. thanks for the offer P.Jzook but i doubt you want to drive from Melbourne to Newcastle just to help me but a lokka in  , would be helpful though means i don't have to teach myself :(

Cheers
Sam
