hey fellas

just wondering what are the pros and cons for having 6.5:1 reduction gears in a suzuki sierra with 29 inch tyres. will it increase or decrease my speed on the black top? im only getting 80 km/h. what percentage in low and high is the 6.5:1

thanks

A good gearing calculator can be found here:

http://www.lepayne.com/gears.html

I'm not an expert, but I believe the higher gearing you go, the slower you go. (ie: 5.14 reduction gears will make the car go faster than 6.5 reduction gears) The advantage is you get better control of your car at low speed.

It should help your top speed -

I run 31s with the 6.5s, and can sit on 110 fairly easily (just takes a while to get there).

cool,i dont mind if i go real slow in low. thats pretty much what i want, just wondering if the 6.5s will make me go even slower then 80km/h or bring me back to 110km/h with the 29 inches

the 6.5s will probably help your top speed, as well as making your low ratio very slow.

Rice is right though, sounds like your engine is clapped out.

Check your compression and tune etc

I have over 200k and I can sit on 90 to 100 with 31's until I hit an incline

X2

I have 29" tyres with 6.5 gears. RPM increase by 250rpm to get 100km/hr. Speedo speed = 93km/hr = True speed = 100km/hr.

Sounds like mine when I first got it . Standard gears, 180k engine & 29" tyres, struggled to do 100km/hr flat to the floor, down a hill, with a tail wind, & drafting a truck. :?

Look at your engine and tuning.

Mine now has a rebuilt engine, mild cam, extractors & 6.5s easily do 100km/hr on highway about 1/3 throttle. :P

Yeah a properly running G13BA should be hitting 100km/h easily. I could crank mine up to over 110km/h on the freeway (it did have extractors + was running a bit rich).

I would not recommend 6.5s on 29's due to high range been to low (ie you will have to rev it hard to sit on 100 km/h)

I have already got extractors and I have a 1.6 vitara head, I think its the motor, its on its way out, would you no how much a rebuild would set me back thanks

I have 4.9 transfer gears and have 235s it revs hard on road but the low range crawl is great. I could go to a 31" tyre and the gearing in high range would be almost back to stock and the low would still be pretty good.

The credit card company will do all the conversions themselves, as long as you are aware of roughly what it will cost in AUD so you know what sorta hit your gonna take.

Rates are currently around 92USc to 1 AUD, but you'll probably only get around 90c on your credit card...

Better in the long run, Depending on what state and how legal you want it via tyre size..

If you get 4.9's now, You can always change diff ratio's after to get a better high ratio for larger tyres.
