Hi all,

Had a bit of weird day on monday with my little zook, Started up well, once she warmed up a bit was down around 850 rev's, perfect!

got around 5kms down the road and came to a stop, and engine cut out, it wouldnt idle,

started it up, had to keep a bit of revs with the accelerator as it would just cut out if i didnt, anyway i got onto the freeway ran fine, and once at the end of the freeway i came to the stop it was idling around 2 or 300 revs max, verrry rough i pulled into the servo, could hear a bit of vacum coming from somewhere so check all hoses one was loose so i fixed it and noise went away but idle was still shit, So i adjusted the carby and she was back to around 900revs, so i was a little concerned but as i wasnt going to be stoping for a while i went on, But when i got to the first stop it was all the way upto 2000revs! so i undid the adjustment i made got it to around 850revs and i continued, Once i got to my destination, it cut out again! i left it for a while, got back in and she just wouldnt idle, so i redid the little adjustment and came home,

And all the way home she went from 800 revs to 2000, down to 1300 up to 2000, down to 850, down to none, up to 2000. etc etc

verry strange;

got home redid the timing, and dwell wich where a little out about 1 degree, and what do u know the problem is gone, and has not come back... but im pretty certain that the timing/dwell wouldnt be related to this problem though, so this is why i have made a thread.

anyone know if this problem would be due to the 1degree timing error, or is it something else,,, im pretty sure it would be something to do with vacume, But all the hoses are new, and besides that one that was loose are fine/not leeking.

so anyone if you have an idea of what this would be if it comes back, let me know. as i dont want this happening when i go wheeling again.

cheers
Jordan

Hey mate, this sounds similar to what i was having / still having. I found a vacuum leak first, ran fine for a week, then bam, she wouldn't idle again. Could floor it and it seemed fine, but foot on clutch it stalled. Sometimes it would idle. Then it slowly got worse as in it started bucking and surging. Changed fuel pump and things were ok for another whole of 1km. I played around with it (removed fuel tank, changed filters, checked canister, egr, plugs, etc) and ended up getting the sh*ts with it and took it to a mechanic. Said it required another carby or a rebuild. I am going to try a second hand one and see if it helps. Will let you know how it goes. Maybe your heading down the same path I have.

Check your carby is wrenched as tight as possible onto the intake manifold. I had the same problem with mine, it wouldn't hold a steady idle for quids - at every set of lights idle was a different speed. I ended up winding the idle screw just to stop from stalling and keep it driveable.

I checked absolutely everything twice and three time, and then I gave the 4 main bolts holding the carb to the manifold an extra 1/2 spin and now it runs like a charm.

Might work, might not - worth a try though.

i had the exact same problem. sometimes it wouldnt idle at all, other times it would idle at over 2000... eventually saw that the wire earthing the dizzy to the body of the car was half melted, so ran a wire from the earth point on the dizzy to the negative terminal on the battery... no problems since! :) also been told i probly need a new coil...

but check the wires either way...
