Was working with a friend of mine the other day, and he was a fellow zooker. he has a 4AGZE corolla engine in his. [i think thats what he said]. it was a 1.6 fuel injected twin cam with a five speed. i was curious, seeing the corolla's are renown for reliability, and asked how much he though it would be to fit into mine. he told me it was $1500 for a 'half cut'. he said that included the gearbox. now the word 'half cut' implies there being more parts to buy.... am i right? and does anyone know of a website where you can buy 4AGZE engines and gearboxes so i can check prices?

$1500 is pretty good for a RWD halfcut

things that suck about the conversion
tis a toyota engine
they are heavy so ruins the handling
its a toyota engine
the gearbox is longer so the engine site forward
its a toyota engine
nothign really lines up and they always end up a messy converstion
its a toyota engine
you have lots of customparts that are hard to replace in the middle of nowhere
its a toyota engine
toyotas arent reliable, toyota jsut spend lots of money telling you that

a half cut is normally a car from japan. That before they exported it to aust it was cut in half. so ya still normally get the steats dash engine wireing loom etc.

actually its easier to just buy a vitara, lots of little things make even a 1.6 a drama in a 1 litre sierra

maybe try asking on a toyota forum. I've seen a toyota engine conversion and a gti conversion, if its speed you want the gti hammered along.

Hey Royce, my last car was a Toyota Corolla Seca 85 model with 1600. 354,000 km when I traded her in after buying her almost new and never did any work to the engine! Only just started to have a small oil leak towards the end. I did all the services myself and used nothing but the best oil.

Yeh, I'd say reliable :D

Cheers

ok.... it seems most people have a bone to pick with every engine mod possible. SO, for the easiest cheapest more powerful/torque conversion, tell us you preference

do you want easiest, chepest or most powerful?
easiest, Maruti 1 litre
cheapest, good second hand 1 litre
most powerful, one of the engines out of the bandag bullet

being a 1 litre sierra makes it a tad more difficult cause the trans tunnel is narrower and there is less bonnet room

good compromise is a 1.6 from a vitara and a 5speed from a 1.3 sierra, a bodylift should solve the bonnet and tunnel clearence and if you cut the mounts and gearbox crossmemeber from a 1.3 sierra you should be able to get it all back in so it looks OK

My advice, take it all leave it is to go with the 1600 conversion. i have personaly had it done recently i might add,and love the power/ torque increase. It wasn't in the shop for very long. They get an adaptor plate so it just bolts straight in. with just a couple of washers on the engine mounts. Im running 32's with series 3 rockhoppers and i can cruze at 100kmph quite easily. However it revs very high but that because i have the rockhoppers. She uses a little more fuel at those speeds. If you want you can getthe fuel injection to. My suggstion is get it all at once save you some dollers in the long run. My mistake. I didnt do that and its goen to cost a little bit now. If you can afford it go the 1600 with the 16valve efi. thats the top notch. If not do what i did a reco 1600 and save by using your old carby. Use your head to a bump up the compression. Just my advice use it or not. Do your research!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy zooking.

Sorry to grave-dig, but I want to know more about 4agze+sierra=
-Can a fwd motor be used?
-What is the block made of?

I was seriously considering this conversion as my engine was smoking like a chimney and after all the research it was the cost that put me off.

You "can" use a fwd motor but it's a bit of work to convert it to fit, if it's just a 4age it's the intake manifold having to be cut and shut and possibly some other stuff (water piping) needing extra work. Along with needing to find a T50 box, OR a W box with an adapter bellhousing (expensive, as in $500 for box and $500 for adapter, It may be more, I was looking at getting a T50 and they are around $400 if you can find one)

I am not 100% sure about converting a fwd 4agze, however I think the 4agze are ALL fwd so I'm sure it can be done, but it will be more work again.

IF you can find a rwd 4age, it would be the easiest conversion of the 4age types I think because you already start with a rwd setup motor, there is still a lot of fab work to be done, but at least you're not stuffing around cutting and shutting intake manifolds and re-routing water pipes e.t.c.

Now for the bit that put me off. These are the prices I remember off the top of my head, I did the research in January so not that long ago but may have changed or I may have remembered a bit off. These were wreckers prices and average second hand private sale, you might get cheaper. The motors were all "run tested" but you could still get a bad one and be rebuilding after a short time.

IIRC:
T50 = $400
Wbox+Adapter = $1000
4age bare motor RWD (still needs ecu + loom) = $1300-1600
4age ecu + loom = $300
4age silvertop halfcut (fwd) = $2500
4age blacktop halfcut (fwd) = $3000
4agze halfcut (fwd) = $3500

Then you need to think about other costs once you have it and go to put it in.

These include:
Custom clutch setup - as the toyota stuff is hydraulic and your stock sierra is cable.

Radiator - pretty sure you need to recore the 1.3 or put in one from a 1.6L.

Engine mounts - if you are good at fabwork (which you need to be for a cheaper conversion) they won't be too much trouble.

Moving Transfer case - The toyota box is longer and you NEED to move your transfer case to do the conversion properly.

Custom Shafts - You had to move your transfer case so depending on how far, you may need to change the Jackshaft, and Front and Rear tailshafts.

Shifter hole - you just moved your transfer and part of that is cutting a bigger hole for the shifter. Depending on the gearbox you may have the same issue with that, I didn't get that far when I was looking at it.

Oils and fluids - When you're changing an engine you have to replace them and the costs soon add up.

Mod Plate - couple of hundred dollars for this, get the engineer on side BEFORE you start the conversion.

Insurance - I've heard of people having trouble even with the vit 1.6. In a sierra, I can't find this to confirm.

Upgrades - now that you have at a minimum double the power and torque of the stock engine, you have a good chance of breaking things so you need to look at this as well, I won't go into it now, post is huge already.

Maintenance - You have a lot of non standard parts now, what happens when they break.

To answer your second question, I'm pretty sure they are an alloy block, Ideally you want a 7 rib block (stronger) but unless you're chasing huge amounts of power you don't really need to worry about it.

I had decided on getting a RWD redtop 4age if I was going to do the conversion, while it would be awesome to put a 4agze in, I couldn't justify the cost increase and extra work to fit it and maintain it.

Good luck with it, you NEED to be handy on the tools and at fabricating (or know someone who will help you who is) and you'll still need to farm some stuff out unless you own or have good access to a machine shop and the skills to do what's needed. Again, in the end I chose not to do this due to COST rather than anything else, but it will take a LOT of time and effort to do correctly.

GZE is cast steel block. Only the GZE has the extra webbibgs on the block. It also has more internal oil ports for better lubrication.

4AGZE front cuts can be had for $2500 or less over here. ( maybe less in UNZUD) but you will need the T50 box AND!!!! its bottom support brackets!!! Most people forget these and wonder why they have shaft play in their gearbox after only a few months.

I reckon you should find an early vitara G16a TBI motor and fit that. Great engine and easy to find in NZ.

4agze for sale
I want more power than a G16a can give me. Plus I don't want head cracking problems. Does a T50 box bolt on to the 4agze or is it harder than that?

What a load of.....

I was racing a PRB Clubman with a 16v 4AGE in it - and have had quite a lot to do with those with the 20v 4AGE engines in them. Their a very reliable engine. The 4agze however puts out lots of heat and I'd prefer a NA 20v any day.

Wouldn't put one on a zook though, As already mentioned it never works well and is a dog of a conversion. You'd be better served with another Zook engine as a replacement.

Can I ask why you would want power in a 4wd
Wouldn't you want torque not power

I have a g16a with a g13ba head on it
Very low compression
Stock gearing
Can fly up hills in 5th
I can even overtake cars on a hill :)
I can wind my Sierra up to 130kph on flat straight on 29/30 tyres
It's bloody scary
I don't understand why u would want more power then a g16a

Just my 2c

I was doing the 4AGE converision, pretty much need to change EVERYTHING!

if i was to have my time over again, i would spend alot of time reading on other peoples mistakes and achieved goals before i would have started my build. i would have ended up going with a EFI Vit engine.

i believe the Corolla engines are strong and reliable, with the 4 or 5 that i have known / dealt with, i have nothing but good things to say about them.

i just believe it would be much easier to go a tried and tested solution instead of cracking your engine conversion cherry on something tough like the 4AGE conversion.

FYI.... any 4A series motor will have the same gearbox stud pattern.

84 model corolla's come with a T50 5 speed in them... and the whole corollas can be found pretty easily. the autos can be found just as easily.

toyota sprinters came out with a RWD 4AGE bigport in them.... just a suggestion if you want to save heart ache.

but the best thing as i stated earlier is to search and see other peoples problems they encountered.

good luck whichever way you go.

just remember, there are a lot of unfinished projects out there... you dont want to add one to the list.
