my 91 vitara is making a hell of a taping/rattling noise.
thought it was tappets but checked them and all good
"worst case scenario"
just wondering if it does "throw a leg out of bed"
where can I get a low km jap G16B from and about how much?
not too keen on stuffin round with a conversion to diff motor
one out of a swift will not fit i have been told something bout the dizzy?
but I'am Yet to look right into it

did it get any quieter? the tin rocker cover does make em sound a bit rattly if your not used to it
does it have good oil in it? very important wit these engines
other tings to check is the bottom pulley keyway being in good nick, the bolt can come loose and flog that keywy out
engines I am afraid are hard to come by due to them not being used in japan for 15 years now, they were mainly the 16valves, you can use a swift bottom end and head if you fit your cam and dizzy
I would look at a rebuild if your head and so on is OK

no it didnt get better when i did the tappets
its got 20-50w in it I think needs an oil change/service anyways
I put a bit of 20-50w in it cos it was using a bit of oil.
come to think of it the noise has gotten worse since puttin that in
what oil is recomended.?

not so much the weight but more the quality for some reason
HPR30 always seemed to work ok for me and my smoky 1.3 that was faster than a 1.6

I once got told something by a very respected and long serving specialist suzuki shop
"thre are heaps of oils that work really well in Suzuki engines, Castrol isnt one of them"
he was right every other time

You cannot use the 1.6 litre swift head , the swift uses single point injection and therefore use oval intake ports , the g16b vitara is MPFI and has cloverleaf (sort of) shaped ports , you can by all means use the 1.6 swift bottom end though if you put you vitara sump and oil pickup tube on it.

So I have gathered by this thread that if you don't own a vitara of late model breading your a nobody and don't deserve any respect or answers to a possibly simple question , well , Cheers Paul.
EDIT . Just frustrates me a little that's all , apolligies if I offended anyone , Cheers Paul.

I am gathering from this post you quite possbily had a bad day at work or your dog wont come when you call him, not sure what you call lack of respect but it seems the question was I have a rattly engine any ideas and where would I get another one if it comes to that and I was told a swift was no good
it appears the replies were along the line of they seem to be hard engines to get due to them being old in Japan (I would have NFI seeing I dont import engines, just repeating what somebody that does tells me everytime I ask) but there are a few things that can cause a rattle that you may want to check (who wouldnt want to save money and not fit a new engine) and there was a reply from a suzuki mechanic clarifying some issues with the swift engines and G16b in general, which goes to show how confusing suzuki engine codes can be
sorry if my post isnt to your standard, feel free to fire up and abuse me by the way, you have the honour of posting the 1st negative post in this entire forum, so we may as well degenerate the lot into shit

I rebuilt my 1.3 a couple of times while trying to sort out the supercharger and it cost 90 to bore , 180 for new pistons and rings , bearings mains and conrods 180 and a monotorque gasket set which has a better quality gaskets especially the head gasket , 180 , so with oil , plugs , filter arround 600 dollars for a rebuild , that is doing it yourself , its not that hard if you have a manual , see how you go , the most important thing is keep everything together and in order of dissambly , clean it properly , I used petol in a big tub , then degreaser , Cheers Paul.

thanks paul ..I downloaded a suzuki one off the net....
the reason I bought this car is because I went a bit over board on my project car . after spending about 4 times as much as i had hoped to spend on the motor.... I need to save$$ to finish it..
I'm sure I would be able to rebuilid it for F*#@k all..
BUT I don't realy want to end up going all out again....
lol I might end up with something like yours..Nice work
thanks again

ohh well in that case the ports are still different , the 8 valve vitara head has round ports (like sierra but larger), not oval like the 1.6 swift head.
if you are that keen to get rid of the rattle , maybe the best bet is to take it to someone who can positively identify whether the rattle is tappets , little/big end , piston slap or detonation(pinging) or other. may save you tearing down the entire engine for nothing...

Best cause of the Rattle me and everyone else that has looked at it .
.is the big end bearing..hmm.
:Should I let it go till it goes bang?
or pull the donk out and prepare to delve deep deep of my pockets?
Decisions decisions.
minimum is new bearing
Maximum is ...who knows
