Drove my vitara home tonight (yay, finally) and my low beams stopped working. I could flick them to high beams and it'd work fine but I don't think the people I drove past were very impressed.

I used to occasionally have the light just switch off on me now and then when I was switching beams or putting on my blinker.

How can I fix it?

test the high and low beam switch, thats the only real common point in teh headlights

How and where is that? Bit of a pain driving along at night and going to turn, then everything going black.

Sounds to me like you got an earth fault, the Zook is negative switching... and the high beams are using the low beam wire as an earth... you got some loose wiring somewhere...

the switch is the bit you flick to go from low to high, you might need to get a diagram and pull your column shroud off and poke about with a test light

probably a good start is to turn the lights on and wiggle the switch around to see if you can make the lights go out

Is there a fuse that could've possibly blown? I don't have my service manual here with me at the moment.

check the fuse box under the dash.

Hmmm, how do you tell if your alternator is charging? I was just coming home from work and I went to put my foot down a bit and it started gurgling. and the lights when dimmed. Pulled over and tryed revving it a bit and it died. The light on the battery was a very very dull red.

Fffffuck! I dont know if my battery is rooted or if my alternator has crapped it again.

Uhhhh, not really lol. I have a feeling it might be my alternator, but i'll pick up a new battery tomorrow....if I can get a mate to come tow me home lol

wow, what a waste of RACV roadside assistance.
Called them from home telling them it was within walking distance and that my battery was flat. They wanted to send a tow truck. I told her I only needed a bloody jump start or a tow over the hill. Then she got cranky so I hungup

buy your self a $10 jaycar multi meter and then you will be able to easy diagnose the problem.

Well i'm buying a new battery tomorrow at Repco because I've had a few troubles with it and it's been ran flat a few times which I hear isn't all that good for them. Then I'll start it up and see what readings I get.
