Nearing a mamoth rebuild of my 88 Vitara SWB, but think I may have stuffed up with tyres ! - I have put 235/75 15's on the original (although newly powder coated) rims.! - Trouble is in QLD you can only increase the wheel radius by a total of 15mm ! - mine are about 20mm !

It will really piss me off if I don't get a roadworthy, this car has had every moving part and almost every replacable part replaced! - It's perfect!... so to be picked up on that would shit me no end!...

Has anyone with that size tyre got a RWC in Bris ???? if so can you tell me where ?

Or - anyone got a set of wheels I could borrow to get a rwc if I'm knocked back because of them ?

Cheers

its an increase of 15mm diameter that is allowed. you might pass but it isn't legal by more than 5mm ;)

Pisses me off how silly the rules are ! - They have been attempting to pass a national set of rules (vrb14) that would unify the rules between states - this would permit an increase of 50 mm on the vit.

Interestingly - I have downloaded the complete set of guidlines for RWC testers from qld transport - this 100 odd page doc goes through everything that makes a vehicle UN roadworthy! - they must follow it.. BUT it does not mention increase in diameter - goes through speed and load ratings, width, and track etc..

im not 100% sure but don't vits come stock with 205/70R15's? which means that they are ~662mm in diameter. a 235/75R15 will be ~727.5 which equates to an increase of ~65.5mm, and ergo even vrb14 won't help you

wait is this just on the standard rim or does it apply to the factory specs of the car (if that makes any sense)?

I mean if you change the rim can you go bigger or not? (legally i mean)

No Calmini is only the 2" Kit - not the 3" ! so it's legal

Isn't it just 75% of the difference ? - so 0.75 * 30mm = ~22mm ?

Same rules still apply if you change the rims

So what do ya do if you want to go bigger? Engineers cert. or just do it and hope not to get pulled up...

Ozhummer thanks for bringing this up, I did the same but didn't realise the rules. I wouldn't worry too much though cause I've been pulled up for speeding and the guy didn't bat an eyelid at the tyres...

Difference between the 205 (standard width) and 235 (current width) is 30mm - the profile is 75% of width so and increase of 30 in width = an increase of 75% of the 30mm increase in width so 22mm ish

The rule applies to the maximum height of the tyre, not the rim.

you can go bigger rims, but the tyre will have to get smaller on the wall.

I had 205/70/r15 on my sierra when i bought it. to keep it legal for full comp insurance reasons i went with a 215/75/r15 which is the largest legal tyre.

Id find a set of stock wheel and tyres for the day or find someone that isnt fussy on their roadys.

Thats where having a pre 1992 airbag less car is a good thing as crash test results for font crumple zones did not have to be submitted until the new ADR rules of 1992 where introduced. The rules that do apply are no changes to bump stops, and lift cannot exceed 30% of the original wheel travel (always just estimated at 50mm).. If any police tries to defect me for suspension, they had better be prepared to feel really stupid in court! ..

yes that would work BUT if i am correct the standard profile is a 70% and you have replaced it with a 75% profile. therefore you need to do the total calculations

vits are 205/75, another reason why they are better

lift isnt 30% of original wheel travel, you have to retain 66% of the original wheel travel in bump and rebound, great rule for limiting how much you can lower a car, not so great for lifting

when i bought my sierra it came with a safety cert and it has 31s, 2in body lift, 2in spring lift and a 1.6 without a mod plate. i believe it was inspected by a mobile guy at the gold coast. I knock back vehicles which have mods that are not legal because its me that deals with the penalty if it is involved in and accident. There are plenty around that do write them out though.

I recently got my LWB roadworthied in QLD. Has 30inch tyres and the bloke didn't bat an eyelid at it. Only needed to get modplates for the engine and long range fuel tank.

dodgey road worthys arnt that hard to find if you know the right people i can get my extended shackles, 31" muds, non mod plated bucket seats, no spare Tyre as it blocks my tail lights, my tail lights on a swinging panel, duel fuel system and whatever else that's on my car through only difference is it will probably cost $100 for the cert and everything was installed after i got the cert if any questions asked
