The front locker for an 08/09 Jimny is an RD118, not an 87. Does this make a difference?
If it will not fit, does this mean, if I want a locker, I cannot go to a 26 spline but have to stay with a 22? This would mean I cannot get much of an upgrade, which kind of seems even more necessary with lockers.
what he is saying is yes you can get a locker but not one off the shelf. you will need a RD118 OR a RD87 AND a 26 spline side gear kit. you don't need the stock side gears when you go to a locker but the locker still has to grip the axles by the side gears. No Jimny front locker comes with the 26 spline side gears so you have to mod it or the diff housing. Diff housing mods would probably be cheaper but the locker mods would be a hell of a lot easier and it is garanteed to fit.

I don't really wanna fit Hilux diffs. I suspect that would add a lot of extra work anyways with suspension bracketing mods.
Not to mention, new rims to.

Ok, so as I understand it...
I can fit an RD88 in the front with 26 spline axles, which requires modification to the diff housing.
If I use an RD118, this will fit straight in, but will require modification to the side gears to accept the 26 spline shafts.
What costs might be involved with each of these? I'll ask Peter when I see him tonight. I'm dropping over my spare front assembly so he can work on the other one out of the car.

Is there a direct side gear modification for an RD118 to accept a 26 spline axle, or is this axle just too big for the Locker?

No mate they are the same locker it is just the upgrade there wont be any difference between the two in size. both can be modded for the side gears or you could mod the housing and fit either in. to mod the housing will cost a lot if you can't or don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. the side gears for a sierra are around $360 so it will probably be similar for jimny then maybe a bit more for fitting.

I think you have misinterpreted him.
What I believe he is asking is.... Assuming that the front locker itself (RD118) is smaller than the rear locker (RD88), will the 26 spline side gears from the RD88 still fit to the smaller body of the front RD118?
So if the front locker is physically smaller, will the side gears still be the same size as the larger rear locker?

I like this idea so you intend to order an rd88 for the front?.....if you have a jimny front diff this will not fit as the jimny locker is smaller than the rd88. you will have to order the jimny front PLUS a set of 26 spline gears. its interesting to see in thier photos that the cv appears to be the same length and setup as a sierra, if so you would have to run sierra spindles etc.
to me that means you can get a side gear kit for a front jimny locker.

even easier, if you have the spare housing!
Have a look at your rear housing, I can cut the welds on the tubing on mine then post to you (size maybe small enough). Then you can cut out the 1L size centre bolt pattern and hat etc, Then weld in the rear housing section with the 1L front jimny size tubes/swivels.
That sounds similar, but will need to be jigged so everything lines up and is welded straight.

Have read every word. The correct words I should have used is "What sort of cost and from whom would I get these gears?" part of which you answered in the very next post after mine.
I have just now got a response from Italy...
------------------------
Hello again,
yes we have the solution for this.
You have to buy the front ARB that suits your Jimny model-ARB part number RD118- do not buy the rear ARB to fit in the front axle because you can't do this.
Then you have 3 options:
1) buy from your local ARB dealer 2 spare 26 spline side gears of the rear ARB - RD88- and fit them in the front one (but the cost of these 2 spare parts is very high here in Italy about 500 EUR!)
2) buy 2 26 spline side gears made in Trialjimny to fit in your front ARB locker, price is 300 EUR and the material and resistance is much better than the ARB side gears
3) send us your 2 front 22 spline ARB side gears and we can modify them into 26 spline at the price of 100 EUR.
Option 2 and 3 are only available for the customers who buy our axle kit, because the price we make on these is our actual cost.
Cordiali Saluti/Best Regards
Giacomo

Me likes the third option

Oh, and in my defense, This is a steep learning curve. I understand how a diff works, but have never stripped one, I understand the concept of a Locker, but I have never laid eyes on an one except in pictures on the net, which shows bugger all.
This is my first Suzuki, first 4WD and first drive train modification ever. However, ask me about my collection of 1967 HR Holdens and I might surprise you with what I know
So please accept that I might (like many on here) ask silly questions, or may even ask the same question twice, but in a different way.

Yeah I kinda agree, but I don't think Peter wants the hassle
Also, if I damaged the front axle housing, that's a lot of work on another

would be interested to see how they do that with a nice spline finish!

i'd be talking to a local ARB dealer to see what they can do for you. if the prices are anything like the sierra ones, and they probably are because it is basically the same thing, then they will more than likely be around the $360 price which would be cheaper than all of those prices after currency conversion and frieght.
I agree with joe, bs they are stronger than the factory arb side gears and you are not going to be able to modify a spline and retain any decent amount of strength.
We all started some where and I can understand that you don't know 100% what you are dealing with but before this thread I didn't know anything about jimny lockers, I just read joe's posts and infered some sierra knowledge...

I think the biggest issue you would have is that the jimny in High pinion front. So using the rear 3rd cardle and pumkin will result in a low pinion fittment and reuire plenty of other steering mods to get it to work.

Unless you go coily centre. But then can you get a airlocker for them? Then ratios's are different to jimny also..Jim 4.09 to coily 3.9?

I've sent trialjimny an email asking about the quality of their re-splining. Might hear back tonight.

Hello,
we modify your ARB side gears with a special process called electro erosion.
It is not a modification that the average mechanic or 4x4 shop can do, infact we are not a 4x4 shop but we are a machining company specialized in automotive gears (mainly racing cars).
We made this modification to any customer who bought our Jimny axle kit since we started building it back in 2002, not 1 failure since then.
After this treatment the backlash between our own modified side gears and our axles is far better than the backlash between the original ARB 22 spline side gear and the jimny 22 spline stock axle. We also balance the assembly dinamically before shipment.
What forum are you in? Outerlimits? I would be more than happy to partecipate.

EDM FTW!
EDM is amazing. Cj on here had a allen key hex machined in the head of 8.8 bolts via EDM. It's capabilities seem almost endless is you have the $$$ and time.

Sounds like a whole lot of work compared to asking joe nicely to grab a locker and some gears and set it up and freight it up to you

X2 And you wont void your Air Locker warranty either..

Well, yes. True. Good point.
Will modifying the side gears void the warranty on the rest of the unit?

If you replace the 22 spline ARB air locker side gears with 26 spline ARB air locker side gears then I would say not . If you use some other brand then I would say yes this would void your warranty, but you would have to ask ARB to be sure..

Just a thought.
I keep a set of 22 spline gears on hand (a little warn of course) so if there is ever a failure, swap em over and send it back.
Is this difficult and does it require special tools?

Yes if you dont know what you are doing . If you use ARB stuff I dont see you having any trouble with the Air Locker.
Remember ,you get what you pay for!!!!
I have hammered my Lockers for 6 years now and they look like new still, so why waste time and money changing bits of them with unknown modified stuff when you can buy the side gears from ARB ,bolt them in and off you go...JMO.

wise words from kenn.
what i would do is buy 26 spline sidegears from arb, that way there in no quality issue and warranty is as normal.
i would then find someone who can make you some 26 spline axles...(now who on here just bought some axle making machinery?..... )
and with those 26 spline axles i would be running late model 26 spline vitara cv's.......that is unless you have allready changed to sierra spindles....in that case just get some REAL 26 spline hd cv's.
