hey all,
What is the best way to store a engine for a while, what things should be done to it?
I bought a 2nd hand low k engine and wont be putting it in till later in the year. its been removed by the old owner about a month ago, and been sitting in a garage since.

Spray WD40 all over it inside and out.

wd40 every couple of weeks is too much effort and can do damage by washing away the oil which is preventing rust! Tape up any holes into the motor. exhaust, intake, vaccuum etc. leave the plugs in. pull the rocker cover off and pour a thick oil over everything, rotate the motor by hand a couple of times. come back and repeat every few weeks or so if your worried.

The BIGGEST thing to worry about is storing the motor somewhere dryish, and raised off the ground a little, an old tire and a tarp is perfect.

First time you start it is more important, by making sure the sump and pickup has been cleaned and priming the oil pump/filter properly. and treat its first couple of oil changes as you would with a new motor.

Just plug up the inlet/exhaust and stick it in the garage. No need to muck around lubing up everything - especially as it's only a few months.

DO you think i could have overreacted?
I changed my oil the otherday, when the old oil was drained from the pan to container i found two small metalic slithers about 3mm round, goldy brass looking, I thought oh great, as i recently put a new ported head on it. I cant be sure of the blocks ks, but the body has done 220k.
I changed the oil after the new head was put on to clear out the gasket goo and other crap, do you think those slithers could be part of the head? or more likely bearings in the block?
new motor has done 150k got it for $600
